David G. Elmore, JD'58
David G. Elmore owns and chairs one of the most successful conglomerates in the sports and entertainment industry. The Elmore Sports Group has offices in Utah and California and owns six minor league baseball and hockey teams in the western United States as well as several companies in industries that include travel, facilities management, special events management, and sports marketing.
Three years after receiving his business degree from Indiana University, Elmore graduated from the School of Law in 1958. As a law student, he also obtained a CPA certificate. In 1958, he joined McBride Baker Wienke & Schlosser in Chicago, where he became partner. Elmore stayed with the firm until 1968 and founded the Elmore Sports Group in 1969.
Elmore embodies the entrepreneurial spirit, applying strong business acumen to his personal passions - sports, travel, and community outreach. He believes the accessibility and entertainment afforded by minor league sports strengthen neighborhoods and families. A leader in the professional sports community and business world, Elmore is recognized as a unique and influential player by several industry organizations, such as Baseball America and the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (NAPBL). He sits on the Joint Committee of the NAPBL, which brings major and minor league teams together to work on mutual concerns.
Like many entrepreneurs, Elmore has experience in a variety of industries. He began investing in real estate in Colorado in the 1970s and later expanded into travel, life insurance, hotels, and manufacturing. In 1989, Indiana University named Elmore "Entrepreneur of the Year."
Throughout his career, Elmore has been a strong supporter of local, state, and national politics. In 1983, the White House appointed him to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board of the U.S. Department of Commerce. He has also served on the Travel and Tourism Committee of the National Council for U.S.-China Trade and was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization from 1969 to 1984.
And though he travels between his company's offices extensively, Elmore finds time to serve his alma mater. Since 1990, he has been a member of the IU Foundation's Board of Directors.
