NBA Alumni Honor 'Trailblazer' Frank Motley

Alumni attending the National Bar Association meeting in Atlanta presented Frank Motley with the organization's first annual Leadership Service Award.

Rapheal Prevot Jr., JD'84, and Dean Lauren Robel, JD'83, presented the award, which honors Motley for his "more than 20 years of outstanding service as a trailblazer for diversity in admissions and for his overall contributions to the African-American legal community." As dean of admissions, Motley admitted nearly 5,000 students, more than half of Indiana Law's living alumni base. He continues service to Indiana University as current associate vice chancellor for academic support.

Many alumni attending the early-August breakfast spoke of the lasting impression Motley made on them. Max Richardson Jr., JD'83, reminded everyone how Motley would go out of his way to assure that the students he admitted stayed on track. A visibly moved Motley described himself as "a gardener — I planted the seeds, but all of you turned into the flowers you were meant to be."

Many thanks to Prevot, Nora Peoples, JD'82, and Frank Seales Jr., JD'74, for organizing the annual alumni breakfast.
