Prospering in a Law Firm and Not Just Financially

This presentation will be on Thursday April 12 from 4:30 to 5:30 in Room 121. R. Neil Irwin (class of 1971 and Board of Visitors member) of Bryan Cave will talk to students about alternative ways to get to the big firm, role lawyers can play in negotiations, big, small & solo practices, expectations for summer internships and how you can make the best of it. Making the Most of Your Summer

On Tuesday April 10 there will be a presentation on Making the Most of Your Summer. It is on Room 123 from 12 to 1. This presentation is for 1Ls. Food will be provided and you should sign up on Symplicity.

Final Lunch with a Lawyer

Our last lunch with a lawyer program this semester will be on Wednesday, April 11 with Bob Cramer from the GAO. It will be in the Student Lounge from 12 to 1. Please sign up on Symplicity. Remember if you have not yet met your PRACTICE Program requirements, this will fulfill one of the category C requirements.

PLI Patent Practice & Bar Presentation

PLI will make a presentation on Patent Practice and the Patent Bar. It will on Wednesday, March 21, from 4:30 to 6. It will be held in the Lewis Building in room 312.

Indianapolis Bar Association Presentation

The Indianapolis Bar Association will make a presentation on the benefits of joining and discuss their Bar Exam Course. It will be on Tuesday, March 20, in Room 125 from 12 to 1. Please RSVP on Symplicity. They will provide pizza.

Student/Faculty Judicial Clerkship Reception

There will be a reception for students interest in Judicial Clerkships in the Faculty Lounge (3rd floor) on Thursday, March 22 from 4 to 6. Faculty members who have clerked will be attending. This is another great opportunity to hear about the benefits of clerking.

Judicial Clerkship Application Process

There will be workshop on the Nuts and Bolts of the Judicial Clerkship Application Process. It will be on Wednesday, March 21 from 12 to 1 in Room 123.

ABA Labor and Employment Presentation

The American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law is sending several knowledgeable and experienced attorneys to this law school to talk about career opportunities in the field of LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW. It will be held on Thursday, March 8 from 12 to 1 in Room 216. Please RSVP on Symplicity.

Judicial Clerkship Panel

There is be a panel discussion by recent alums who have done Judicial Clerkships. It will be on Tuesday March 6 from 12 to 1. Room to be announced.

Judicial Clerkship Panel Discussion

There will be Clerkship Panel on Friday, February 23, from 3 to 4 in Room 122. Hon. Deanell Reese Tacha, Chief Judge of the 10th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, Hon. Diane P. Wood, Judge of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and Judge Sutton will lead a discussion on judicial clerkships. They will discuss what they value in a clerks and what they are looking for in a clerkship application.

Student Panel Discussion on Judicial Clerkships

There will be a discussion on Judicial Clerkships by students who participated in the ABA Diversity Judicial Clerkship program last year. This will be a valuable and informative discussion for anyone interested in doing judicial clerkships. It will occur on Thursday February 22 from 12 to 1 in Room 124.

Federal Government Workshop

There will be two workshops on the jobs opportunities in the Federal Government. The first will be Monday February 19 from 4:30 to 5:30 in Room 125. If you are unable to attend the first workshop, it will be repeated on Wednesday February 21 from 12 to 1 in Room 216.

B547 Job Search Workshop

There will be a workshop on finding B547 summer internship opportunities on Wednesday February 14 from 12 to 1 in Room 125. All students are welcome.

Lunch with a Lawyer - Scott Bearby '92 and Michael Mangarelli '00 from the NCAA Headquarter will discuss Sports Law - Wednesday 2/7 from 12 to 1 in the Student Lounge. Open to all students (1, 2, 3Ls). Please sign up on Symplicity so we have an idea of how much food to order.

Resume Writing Workshop

Resume Writing Workshop - Tuesday 2/6 from 12 to 1. Room to be announced. This is a great chance to work on and improve your resume. Open to all students.

Spring Break Trip Planning Workshops

There will be two planning sessions for the Career Services Spring Break Trip - Monday 2/5 from 12 to 1 and Wednesday 2/7 from 4:30 to 5:30. Rooms to be announced. We will be planning our annual trip to Washington DC and new trips to New York, Texas, and California. These trips are open to all students (1, 2, & 3Ls) and are a great opportunity to meet with potential employers and network. Both sessions will be the same. Students need only attend one of them.

Nonprofit Career Fair

The will be a Nonprofit Career Fair on Thursday February 1, 2007 from 11 to 3 at the Indianapolis Convention Center (1000 S. Capitol Ave.). BCG Attorney Search - Geographic Job Search Presentations

BCG is a member of the National Association of Legal Search Consultants. They will be having a series of legal search workshops focusing on different geographic location in the United States. This is not a sales pitch. Each presentation will provide valuable info on hiring trends and other important issues relevant to that area.

Alternative Law Career Presentation

Cheryl Heisler will make a presentation on alternative law careers. Her business, Lawternatives is located in Chicago. The presentation will be on Thursday February 15 from 12 to 1:30. Room to be announced.

Chicago Job Search Presentation

Kathy Morris, an attorney since 1975 and former Director of Placement and Career Counseling at Northwestern University School of Law, will make a presentation on legal job searches for 2L and 3Ls who are interested in the Chicago area. The presentation will be on Thursday January 25 from 12 to 1, room to be announced. In addition, she will be available after the presentation to meet with third year students who are interested in the Chicago job market. For more information on Ms. Morris, go to her website.

Lunch with a Lawyer - Spring Semester

Career Services is will continue with it's Lunch with a Lawyer program starting again in January. The first lunch will be on Wednesday January 17 with Patti Cummings '02. She is the Director of Middle Way House and will discuss public interest. On Wednesday January 31, Kip Drew '89 will discuss his work at university counsel for Indiana University.

In February, Scott Bearby '92 and Michael Mangarelli '00 will discuss sports law on Wednesday February 7. They both work for the NCAA in Indianapolis. On Wednesday February 21 Phil Scalletta '75 who works for Ice Miller will discuss environmental law. On Wednesday February 28 Bryan Babb '99 and Sam Laurin '87 will discuss Litigation & Appellate Practice. Until otherwise specified each lunch will be from 12 to 1 in the Student Lounge. Please sign up in Career Services for each lunch. There are more lunch still be planned for January and February.

Washington DC On-location Recruiting Event

Career Services inaugural Washington DC on-location recruiting event will take place on Monday, January 8, 2007. It will be held in the DC Bar Conference Center, 1250 H Street, NW from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This program is a great opportunity for first, second, and third year students looking for employment in Washington DC. The deadline to bid on employers has been changed from Thursday, December 14 to Sunday December 17, 2006 at 11:59 p.m..

Presidential Management Fellowship Workshop

Presidential Management Fellowship applications are now being accepted. The deadline is November 30. There will be workshop on the application process on Friday November 17 from 12:15 to 1 in Room 120.

Kelley School of Business Presentation on Joint Degree Programs

Advisers from the Kelley School of Business will make a presentation on the different degrees they have that can be taken as a joint degree along with a law degree. It will be on Monday, November 13 in Room 120 from 12 to 1.

Indianapolis Bar Association Presentation

There will be a presentation by the Indianapolis Bar Association regarding their organization and their course on Indiana Bar Exam. It will be held in Room 124 on Thursday November 2 from 12 to 1.

Informal Question and Answer Session on Clerkships

Judges and Clerks from the Indiana Court of Appeals, here Tuesday Oct 24 for arguments in the moot court room at noon, will also be in the Faculty Lounge from 2:15 to 3:15 that day for an informal Question and Answer period discussing clerkship. This is a great opportunity to find out what a clerk does, the advantages of clerking, what judges are looking for in a clerk, and an array of other clerkship topics from the source. Come with your questions or just an inquiring mind. Snacks will be provided.

Resume Review Speed Dating Style Workshop

The Resume Review Workshop will take place on Thursday November 2 for first year students who have attended the Resume Writing Workshop on November 1. It will be held in the Student Lounge from 4:30 to 6. Students will have an opportunity to meet with 8 to 12 alums to receive a 5-minute critique of their resume. These alums do the hiring for their place of work and are experience in reviewing resumes.

Department of Labor Application Process Workshop

Judge Alice Craft '73 an Administrative Law Judge with the Department of Labor will be here on Monday October 23 to discuss the application process for law clerk positions. The presentation will be in Room 122 from 12 to 1.

Lunch with a Lawyer - 10/9 & 10/11

On Monday, October 9, we will be holding a special Lunch with a Lawyer session in the Student Lounge from noon to 1pm. Our speaker will be Frederick N. Kopec, JD '80. Mr. Kopec is currently Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for RENEW DATA CORP. - Austin, TX and has over twenty-five years of experience in providing legal services for businesses, including corporate, commercial, real estate and intellectual property matters, litigation and employment law issues.

POSTPONES - On Wednesday, October 11, the Lunch with a Lawyer session will feature Phil Scaletta, JD '75. Phil works at Ice Miller in Indianapolis and the topic of discussion will be Environmental law.

Lunch with a Lawyer for the week of 10/2 - 10/6

Career Services will have 3 Lunch with a Lawyers Programs next week. All three programs will be held in the Student Lounge from 12 to 1. Students should sign up in Career Services or on EASE. Food and drinks will be provided for those who sign up.

On Monday 10/2, Mr. Richard Fanyo '76 will meet with students. Mr. Richard ("Ric") L. Fanyo is a Director of the Denver, Colorado firm of Dufford & Brown, P.C. He has a very unique level of expertise. In the areas of public utility and mining work, he is one of a relatively small number of attorneys who has experience in the entire energy cycle - from mineral extraction through processing, delivery and consumption. On Wednesday 10/4, Sandra Leek '79 who works at Baker & Daniels will lead a discussion on Employment Law.

Indiana State Bar Association Presentation

There will be presentation on the Indiana Bar Association on Wednesday 9/27 from 12 to 1 in Room 122. The panelists will be Clay Miller (Baker & Daniels, Marisol Sanchez (Bose McKinney & Evans), and Holly Harvey (Bunger & Robertson). Please sign up in Career Services or EASE.

Louisville On-location Recruiting - 9/14 and 9/15

Louisville On-location Recruiting Program is taking place on Friday September 15. There will be an alumni reception the preceding evening (9/14) from 6 to 8. Both events will take place in the Seelbach Hilton located at 500 Fourth Ave. in Louisville (phone: 502-585-9239). Interviews will take place from 9AM to noon on 9/15. Students should sign up in Career Services if they plan to attend either the alumni reception or the interviews. For those participating in interviews, there will be a lunch provided afterwards. Transportation will be provided for those requesting it at no charge.

Kimm Walton Presentation

Kimm Walton, one of the premier experts on the legal job search and author of Guerilla Tactics, will here for a presentation on Wednesday November 15. It will be held in the Moot Court Room (Room 123) from 4:30 to 6:30.

2nd Round Interviews Workshop

There will be a workshop on 2nd Round Interviews on Wednesday September 6 in Room 123 from 12 to 1.

Evansville Bar Association Diversity Committee Presentation

The Evansville Bar Association Diversity Committee will be making a presentation on Thursday September 7 from 6 to 8 in Room 122. It will be an informal discussion with attorneys and judges from the Evansville area with tips on getting jobs in Evansville. They are providing pizza, soft drinks, and beer. It is open to first, second, and third year students. Those interested in coming should sign up on EASE or in Career Services.

Presidential Management Fellowship Information Presentation

Dean Keller will explain the application process for the PMF program. There will be two presentations. One on Wednesday August 30 from 4:30 to 5:30 in Room 124 and one on Friday September 1 from 12 to 1 in Room 124.

Westlaw Demonstration

There will be two Westlaw demonstrations. One Wednesday August 30 and one on Thursday August 31. Both will be held in Room 125 from 12:15 to 1. Westlaw is a site students can go to and do searches for law firms and or attorneys. It can be very useful in your job search.

Lunch with a Lawyer

Lunch with a Lawyer is an opportunity for students to meet and talk with lawyers from wide range of work settings. Jack Bobo '96 who works for the U.S. Department of State and is a trade policy adviser on biotechnology will be our first guest. He will be in the student lounge on Monday, August 28 from 12 to 1. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. Students need to sign up on EASE or if they don't have an EASE account sign up in Career Services with Bruce Farrand.

Interview Skills Workshop

There will be an interview workshop on Wednesday August 16 from 2 to 4 in room 125. This will be an excellent chance to prepare for the upcoming on-campus interviewing season.

1L Professionalism Workshop

The 1L Professionalism Workshop will be on Tuesday 4/11/06 from 12 to 1 in the Moot Court Room

Interview Idol

Interview Idol will take place on Friday March 31 in the Moot Court Room from 11 to 12. Students will participate in interviews and be critique by alumni judges. See first hand good and poor interviewing skills.

The Brooks Inns of Court of Evansville will be holding a dinner and reception on Wednesday March 15, 2006. We are inviting 5 first, second and third year students to meet judges and attorneys in the Evansville area. Jurists in Residence

Diane Wood, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and James Carr, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and also the Chair of the Rules Committee for the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, will be Jurists in Residence. The judges will speak to all students over the lunch hour in the Moot Court Room. This will be a special opportunity to hear two noted federal judges. Judge Carr will speak about the work of the Foreign Intelligence Court, though he will be somewhat limited as to how much he can say about specific cases currently in front of the court. Judge Wood will discuss the clerkship application process and the work of clerks in the federal court system. PIZZA AND SODA WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE FIRST 80 ATTENDING THIS NOON SESSION. The JUDGES also will speak in different class forums to the first-year students. Then, they will be panelists for the finals of the moot court competition at 7 p.m. in the moot court room. They will be joined on the panel by Judge Ted Najam of the Indiana Court of Appeals, Indiana Solicitor General Tom Fisher, and Jones Day DC Supreme Court Litigator and alumni board member, Greg Castanias. All are invited.

Indianapolis Bar Association Bar Exam Presentation

The Indianapolis Bar Association will be making a presentation on the Indiana Bar Exam on Friday February 24. The presentation will be in Room 124 from 12 to 1.

1L Interviewing Workshop

There will be a workshop on Interviewing Skills for first year students. The workshop will take place on Friday February 3 in room 125 from 12 to 1.

Resume Round Table

Back by popular demand Career Services will hold another Resume Round Table. It will be held on Thursday 2/2 from 4:30 to 6 in the Student Lounge. There will be attorneys from the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office along with hiring attorneys from Ice Miller, Bingham McHale, Dann Pecar, Sommer Barnard, and Barnes & Thornburg to review and critique student resumes. Students interested in participating should sign up on EASE.

DC/Spring Break Workshops

There will be two workshops providing information on this years Washington DC/Spring Break Trip. One will be on Tuesday January 31 in room 120 from 4:30 to 5:30 and a second workshop will be on Wednesday February 1 in room 122 from 12 to 1.

Cook County Public Guardian's Office Presentation & Interviews

Jim Griffin from the Cook County Public Guardian's Office in Chicago is coming to the law school to recruit 1L's and 2L's for this organization's 2006 summer program next Friday, January 27. For more information concerning this PI organization go to www.publicguardian.org. If you are interested in interviewing for a summer position, please submit an electronic copy of your resume to Bruce (bfarrand@indiana.edu) by 8:00AM, Thursday, January 26 AND attend the information session that Mr. Griffin will be presenting at noon on the 27th (location TBA). Interviews will be scheduled for Friday afternoon based on your submitted resume and attendance at the program.

B710 Summer Internship Program

There will be a meeting for students interesting in gaining academic credit for doing a summer internship. It will be in Room 122, on Tuesday 1/24 from 12 to 1.

EASE Training Sessions

There will be 3 training sessions for students in the new EASE software system. Friday 1/13 from 12 to 1, Wednesday 1/18 from 12 to 1 and Thursday 1/19 from 4:30 to 5:30. All sessions will be held in Room 123.

1L Lexis Training Session

There will be a 1L training sessions on using the LexisNexis software system on Tuesday 1/17 from 12 to 1 in Room 123.

Resume Round Table Speed Dating Style

Back by popular demand the Resume Round Table speed dating style will be held a second time on Thursday, November 17. It will be in the Student Lounge from 4:30 to 6. The Resume Round Table is a great opportunity for first year students who were unable to come to the first one have their resumes reviewed by local practitioners. Please let Kim Bunge or Bruce Farrand know if you plan to attend.

On Thursday, 11/17, First Lt. Holden of the U.S. Army will be here to meet with students for the last Lunch with a Lawyer session of the semester. It will be from 12 to 1 in the Student Lounge. If you would like lunch please RSVP to Bruce Farrand.

Large Firm Presentation

Attorneys from Baker & Daniels will be here to talk with you about what kinds of work you can do and answer questions you might have. It will be in the Room 123 on Wednesday, 11/16, from 12 to 1.

DTCI Presentation 11/16

On Wednesday, November 16, DTCI (Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana) will make a presentation on their organization. The following is from their mission statement. The Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana is an association of Indiana lawyers who defend clients in civil litigation. Our primary mission is to assist and support our members in the substantive and management aspects of their law practices. We provide a forum for our members to associate and exchange ideas. We advocate for our members and their clients and provide a voice of reason in government, the courts, the legal profession, and the community at large.

Cover Letter Workshop

On Tuesday, November 15, Career Services will present a cover letter workshop for first year students. It will be held in Room 125 from 12:15 to 1.

The presentation will be in room 121 from 4:30 to 5:30. Speakers will be Betsy Greene from Greene & Schultz and Lonnie Johnson from Mallor Clendening Grodner & Bohrer LLP. DTCI will be providing pizza. If you plan on attending, please RSVP to Bruce Farrand, by noon on Tuesday November 15.

Walk In Appointments 11/7 - 11/11

During the week of 11/7 through 11/11, Dean Keller and Career Service's Director Amy Conner will not be taking scheduled appointments. They will be taking walk ins between 9 and 4. This is mainly for first year students to have their resumes reviewed but any student can talk in and meet with them if they need assistance.

Lunch with a Lawyer - Judge Jansen

Judge Rudolph Jansen, an administrative law judge working with the Department of Labor in Cincinnati, will talk to students as part of the "Lunch with Lawyers" program on Wednesday 10/26 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Career Services Office ( room 020). This will be a good informational session for 1Ls and a good networking opportunity for 3Ls interested in doing a clerkship upon graduation. Students who are interested in having lunch provided must RSVP by 4PM on Tuesday, Oct. 25, to Bruce Farrand (855-0258, bfarrand@indiana.edu).

Upcoming Career Services Programming for 1Ls.

On Tuesday, November 1 there will be a resume workshop from 12 to 1 in Room 125. For those students who attend the Tuesday Workshop, there will be a bonus resume workshop on Thursday, November 3. This workshop will be done in a speed dating format allowing students to spend five minutes with 8 to 12 local practitioners who will review your resume. This will take place on Thursday, November 3 from 4:30 to 6 in the Student Lounge.

Ted Waggoner - Solo & Small Firm Practice

Ted Waggoner '78, will be presenting at the Lunch with a Lawyer program on Thursday 10/13. He will be discussing Solo & Small practice. It will be held in the Moot Court Room (Rm 123) from 12 to 1. Presenter - Joby Jerrels. Joby had worked at the Attorney General's Office in Indianapolis and is currently an Assistant Prosecutor with the Monroe County Prosecutor's office. This a program designed to give first year students a chance to meet attorneys from a variety of work settings and discuss their experiences. Career Symposium

The annual Career Symposium will take place on Thursday September 15. It will be held in the main lobby of law school from 4:30 to 6. There will be a wide variety of legal professionals participating. It is a great opportunity for first year students to discuss and learn about different careers within the legal field.

Chicago On-Location Recruiting

On Friday, September 23, 2005, we travel to the Chicago Athletic Association for an afternoon of interviewing by employers from small to medium sized firms and government agencies. The day of interviewing will be capped off by a reception that evening joining interested students, the recruiters and area alumni providing an excellent networking opportunity.

For information on the firms/agencies participating, and to sign up (bid) for an interview, please log into your eattorney account and look under the Chicago On-Location phase. The deadline for bidding is September 5th at noon. Remember; if you are bidding for an interview on September 23rd that session will be taking place in Chicago.

Summer 2005 Housing Programs

Emory University is offering a Summer Intern Housing Program for 2005. Any students planning on doing an internship this summer in Atlanta and are still seeking housing can submit an application for housing with Emory University. Priority will be given to those applications submitted before April 15. All relevant information and applications can be obtained at http://www.emory.edu/sihp.

Law students seeking summer housing and students with housing available for the summer are invited to participate in NALP's free online 2005 Apartment Exchange. It's easy - just visit www.nalp.org and follow the link to the Apartment Exchange. The Apartment Exchange will be available from January 15 until May 15, 2005.

Also available for those planning on working in New York this summer is the Summer Living in New York Program sponsored by New York University School of Law. Each year NYU makes their student-apartment-style residences available to summer interns and associated working in the New York business and legal communities, to law students. The Public Interest Law Initiative

The PILI Summer Program allows first and second year law student to apply for positions with Chicago-area public interest agencies. PILI Interns receive $4,500 for ten weeks of work at one of 21 PILI-affiliated agencies. The Peggy Browning Fund

The Peggy Browning Fund is accepting applications for their 2005 Summer Fellowship Program. This is an excellent opportunity for any first or second year law student who is interested in working in Labor and Employment Law. The application deadline is January 14, 2005.
