Producing Leaders in Public Service

Indiana Law students with Dean Lauren RobelPublic service cultivates our students' desire to be leaders in service to society. Five clinics in disability, elder, and family law and 10 additional public interest offerings promote engaged learning. Each year, our Public Interest Internship Program sends more than 120 students to an average of 100 placements.

Hear the value of these experiences from current interns:

"Participating in a Public Interest Internship Program confirmed my passion and desire to work in public interest. It also provided practical experience in the field of child advocacy. Although pursuing a career in public interest is not the traditional course for lawyers, it is an essential path, and the future of our nation depends on quality attorneys protecting civil rights and liberties in this capacity."

Jenny Hesch, JD'08, Children's Legal Defense Fund

"I would recommend a public interest position to anyone, regardless of what they want to do when they get out of law school. Between the opportunity to actually do hands-on work and the chance to make great lifetime contacts, a public interest position is an excellent career booster."

Jeff Peabody, JD'08, International Trade Commission

"I went to law school to find a career that would make me a valuable member of my community. The Public Interest Internship put me in the thick of the battle to balance our freedoms and our security. Now I know I will have the chance to shape our community for the better. Safer communities, better schools, fair treatment: these aren't the interests of some anonymous 'public,' these are our interests. If you want to contribute to your community remember the 'public interests' are also your interests."

Paul Threatt, JD'08, U.S. Department of Justice
