Pro Bono Awards Celebrate Service

Indiana Law students with Dean Lauren RobelIndiana Law recently held a ceremony and reception inaugurating the annual student Pro Bono Awards, sponsored by Baker & Daniels LLP. Sarah Boshears, JD'07, and Rachel Clark, JD'07, received the inaugural Pro Bono Award. Current students Alissa Cohen, Alex Kornya, Julie Miller, and Chloe Pullman, who reported the highest number of pro bono hours during academic year 2006-07, were recognized with honorable mentions.

"The results of our pilot year are impressive and inspirational," Dean Lauren Robel said during the ceremony. "About one-third of the students who participated reported more than 100 hours of pro-bono service during the school year, and the six students we recognized today reported working more than 200 hours each."

Special guest Carl Pebworth, a partner of Baker & Daniels LLP, presented the awards.

2006-07 Winners

Sarah Boshears, JD'07, now works with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago on child SSI cases and medical-legal collaboration.

Rachel Clark is former president of the Tenant Assistance Project, Indiana Legal Services intern, and volunteer girls' soccer coach for Edgewood High School. She continues work with People and Animal Learning Services (PALS) post-graduation while studying for the Illinois and Massachusetts bar exams. She plans pursue work in labor and employment law.

Honorable Mention

The following students reported more than 200 pro bono hours in 2006–07.

Alissa Cohen is a member of the Public Interest Law Foundation and event coordinator for the Inmate Legal Assistance Project. During her summers, she has served as a certified intern for the Florida State Attorney's Office Special Prosecution Unit in Fort Lauderdale in the domestic violence unit and is a certified legal intern with the Monroe County Public Defender's Office.

Alex Kornya has been co-director and student advisor of the Protective Order Project, an intern for the District 10 Pro Bono Project and the Indiana Legal Services Consumer Law Center in New Albany, Ind., and is currently an Indiana Legal Services intern. He is pursuing a public interest/legal services career in consumer law.

Julie Miller spends significant time working with Student Legal Services. She was a law clerk for Owen County Judge. Frank Nardi and in 2007 she had the opportunity to work with Judge Tim A. Baker, a federal magistrate judge in Indianapolis. She hopes to secure a judicial clerkship or to work with a private practice firm in business transactional law.

Chloe Pullman has volunteered for the Autism Legislation Project and clerked for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission., where she worked to enforce federal civil rights laws, in particular workplace discrimination. She's pursuing civil rights/labor and employment law.
