Message From the Dean: Lauren Robel
Indiana University Bloomington is associated nationally and internationally with unsurpassed cross-disciplinary
research in law. The Center for Law, Society, and Culture seeks to establish the Indiana University
School of Law-Bloomington as the preeminent environment for the multidisciplinary study of law,
society, and culture. The Center links our Law School to a campus with a wealth of resources,
bringing together renowned Indiana University scholars who influence the study of law from a variety
of academic perspectives.
The Law School brings many strengths to the Center's mission. Our faculty is deeply involved in multidisciplinary research in law, society, and culture - a tradition the Law School dates to the days of Jerome Hall's tenure on the faculty. Hall's Theft, Law and Society, published in 1935, was one of the most significant contributions to criminal law in its day, because it reached beyond legal doctrine to examine the historical roots of theft law. Our faculty, and the faculty of this distinguished university, continue Hall's work through their scholarship.
The Center for Law, Society, and Culture sponsors lectures, conferences, and published research that reach out to the university community and the world. Through its Center Fellows program, which supports students in the Law School's PhD in Law and Social Science program, the Center assures that multidisciplinary research will continue into the next generation of scholars and teachers.
