Since his freshman year of high school, Helder Pinto has been fascinated by the way commerce affects people and communities. Although the effects of the market aren’t always positive, he says, commerce has the power to improve lives. That’s why Pinto chose to become the first lawyer in his family and circle of friends. He plans to practice business and commercial law to capitalize on his MBA education, legal training, and professional experience in product and market development and management.
Why I chose Indiana Law: “I was excited about finally pursuing my legal education but was a little intimidated about returning to school. Indiana Law did a terrific job in recruiting me. They convinced me that they had the proper balance of a top-tier school with a strong reputation, paired with a small, closely integrated community that would ease my transition back to school and help my career development. And they were right. Quite a few things make going to law school at IU enjoyable: the campus, the faculty, the Office of Career and Professional Development staff, and the students I’m fortunate to call friends.”
Study breaks: “I’m an outdoor enthusiast, so I enjoy the natural beauty of the area and the nearby amenities for outdoor recreation and fitness, such as mountain bike parks, the Hoosier National Forest, Lake Monroe, and the Bloomington Sportsplex.”
Favorite professors: “I like professors who seem to enjoy the material they teach—professors who dissect the details of the doctrine but still provide a big-picture perspective. I particularly enjoyed taking classes from Professor Charles Geyh and Professor Donald Gjerdingen last fall.”
The Indiana Law experience: “My experience so far has been consistent with what I have read in books about law school—the work is hard, but it’s manageable and ultimately rewarding.”
