Another strike! Study break at Suburban Lanes.

Locke Reynolds law firm building.

Internship experiences: Working at Locke Reynolds over the summers has been a tremendous experience. I’ve been able to work with highly skilled attorneys in several different practice areas, which has given me a broader perspective in my studies. The experience will be invaluable when I actually practice law.

Post-graduation plans: I plan to work as an associate at a private law firm. Billable hours, baby!

What I love about Bloomington: I love Clear Creek Trail on a sunny day—it’s great for rollerblading.

Favorite Bloomington restaurant: Shanti Authentic Indian Cuisine

Show I never miss: Top Chef

Favorite movie of all time: The Usual Suspects

The last great book I read: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

Web site I visit every day: NYTimes.com

Favorite music: JAZZ! Especially Latin jazz.

On the dance floor: I love to salsa, although I’ve gotten a little rusty lately. I’ll be back out on the dance floor much more this summer.

Back to school

It was a leap of faith to return to the academic world and leave a well-paid position. Nevertheless, the decision was simple for me because I wanted more of an intellectual challenge in my work and I wanted to make sure that I had room for plenty of career growth. So although the opportunity cost of my lost income was high, my increased enjoyment of my daily work will be priceless.

Black Law Student Association

I’ve been involved as the second vice president for the Black Law Student Association (BLSA), and along with Malika Graham-Bailey, we’ve been very active with BLSA’s Recruitment and Retention Committee. One thing that impressed me about IU—even on a visit before I started Law School—was the significance of the black community. There is support if you need it. In addition, BLSA puts on the Gong Show and the Barrister’s Ball (Law School formal) every year, which are great events that the whole student body gets involved in. It feels great to have BLSA as such an integral part of student affairs for the entire law school.

Working it out

I LOVE the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC). I was just there last night shooting some hoops, lifting weights, and relieving all sorts of law school stress. It’s great to have that kind of high-quality gym “free of charge.” I haven’t taken advantage of the IU Auditorium as much as I would like, but I’ve really enjoyed the performances that I’ve seen there. And the IU Art Museum is a great way to take a quick cultural retreat.

Executive Articles Editor, Indiana Law Journal

All associates at the Indiana Law Journal participate in basic activities like cite-checking and proofreading. It can be tedious at times, but there’s satisfaction in putting out a great product. I’ve been very fortunate to have been elected executive articles editor, which has been one of the most fun things I’ve done in law school. I’ve been able to work with an excellent articles editor team, and we’ve had the opportunity to read and evaluate various articles from every legal niche, from antitrust regulation to criminal punishment theory. Discussing articles together as a team has been like participating in an exclusive and exciting book club.

Tenant Asssistance Program (TAP)

The Tenant Assistance Program (TAP) has been a wonderful experience that has forced me to acknowledge how incredibly valuable a legal education is. Because of the little knowledge that we as students have and our opportunity to work under a supervising attorney, the incredible and all-knowing Jeff Gold, we can make a difference in the lives of real people right now. TAP has also taught me the lesson that although we may not hit a home run every time we help a client, that single or that double can mean a lot. One case that I’ll always be proud of is winning enough time for a client to move out of her apartment, which enabled her to find a suitable home in the same area so as not to disrupt her children’s schooling.

Favorite professor

Professor Luis Fuentes-Rohwer. He showed Harry Potter on the first day of class in my 1L year—how can you not love that?
