Professor Leaffer Visits East Asia
Intellectual property law expert Marshall Leaffer spent the month of July in China (Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong) and Taiwan (Taipei and Kaohsiung) visiting with Indiana Law alumni, touring our partner institutions, and meeting his counterparts in the field of IP.
Meeting leading IP scholars
The trip began in Shanghai, where Leaffer met with faculty members of the
intellectual property department of Fudan University's faculty of law.
He then traveled to Beijing where China University of Politics and Law professor and current Indiana Law S.J.D. student, Qi Jun, arranged for Leaffer to present a seminar to CUPL students on "United States–China Intellectual Property Relations: From Adversaries to Partners." He addressed methods for breaking the current tumultuous cycle of IP-related trade policy between the two countries using legal and educational measures.
He also visited Hong Kong University, where he "felt lucky to have such a pleasant meeting with the leading intellectual property scholars in Hong Kong." His time at HKU included a tour of the school's beautiful campus and meetings with IP students.
In the final leg of his trip, Leaffer visited Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where he was greeted by alumni Bruce Liao, S.J.D.'03, professor at National Chengchi University School of Law, Li-Hui Lu, S.J.D.'06, assistant professor of law at National Kaohsiung University, and Chung-Lun Shen, S.J.D.'06. He also met with current students Rong-geng Tsai, S.J.D.'08, and Hsin-An Yao, S.J.D.'08.
Top-notch Taiwan Alumni Reception
To top off his visit to Taiwan, the Taiwan alumni association hosted a well-attended
reception on July 28. Organized by Liao, Shen, Tsai, and Yao, the event was the largest
the group has hosted.
"There were about 30 Indiana Law graduates attending the dinner," said Leaffer.
"They all talked of their days in Bloomington with genuine nostalgia. So many are doing well
in the legal profession as professors, associates in law firms, and legal counsel in other
settings. They all seem to attribute their successes to their IU education and degrees.
I saw the enormous good will we have built up in Taiwan through the years."
