Students Receive AJA Essay Awards
Indiana Law students were awarded two of the top three prizes for the 2007 American Judges Association (AJA)
annual essay contest.
AJA member and judge Ken Spicer, who serves as probate/juvenile court judge in Delaware County, Ohio, presented Doug Hass, 3L, with a plaque commemorating the first-place award for his paper, "Crafting Military Commissions Post-Hamdan: The Military Commissions Act of 2006." Rebecca Stachel, JD'07, who received the second-place prize for her paper, "The License to Torture: Contrary to Military Practice," received her award by mail. Judge Spicer also presented two plaques to Dean Lauren Robel to hang in the Law School.
"My success here is directly related to the efforts of everyone at the Law School," said Hass, who has won four national legal writing awards during his time at Indiana Law. "When I came to the Law School, I had far more potential than ability to accomplish what I have here. This award, like the others, is therefore a collective one."
The AJA's annual essay competition is open to all full-time law students enrolled in and attending an accredited law school in the United States or Canada. Hass's winning essay will be published in AJA's journal, Court Review.
