Conference Participants Discuss Complex Global Problems
The Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies recently hosted panelists from around the world
for its annual symposium and a lively discussion on the theme of "Operationalizing Global Governance."
Participants grappled with the impact of globalization on the rising networks of both state and
non-state actors who are increasingly responsible for addressing complex world issues such as
the protection of human rights and the achievement of sustainable environmental practices.
Panelists included scholars of law and other disciplines, as well as practitioners from corporations and civil society. Speakers included constitutional law scholar Larry Cata Backer of the Dickinson College of Law at Penn State; Tim Baines and Sarah Altschuller, practicing lawyers from the two leading law firm practice groups on corporate social responsibility, Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP and Foley Hoag LLP; Michael Ewing Chow of the National University of Singapore; and Muna Ndulo, of the Cornell University School of Law and Institute for African Development.
The proceedings will be published in a symposium edition of the journal next fall. In addition, the conference reflected Indiana Law's plans to launch a track on global governance and human rights as a part of its interdisciplinary PhD program in Law and Social Science.
