Conference of Chief Justices and Conference of State Court Administrators

Annual Meeting, July 29-August 2, 2006

From July 29 to August 2, 2006, the Conference of Chief Justices gathered in Indianapolis for their Annual Meeting. A primary function of this meeting was an educational program, which the Indiana Law Journal is thrilled to publish in a special symposium issue (forthcoming, Summer 2007).

The theme for the conference was "Court Leadership 100 Years After Roscoe Pound: Building a Constituency of Support for State Courts." Focusing on Dean Pound's 1906 address to the American Bar Association entitled "Popular Dissatisfaction with the Administration of Justice," the symposium looked back over the 100 years since Pound's address to ponder the evolution of justice. The ILJ's symposium issue will summarize the responses as proposed at the Conference.

The ILJ is glad to welcome the group of distinguished authors that contributed to the symposium: Barry Friedman, Stephen Goldsmith, Roy Schotland, Charles Geyh, David Papke, Russell Wheeler, John Attanasio, Hulett "Bucky" Askew, James White, Judith Resnik, Luke Bierman, Mark Curriden, Lucy Dalgish, and Roger Warren. We are especially pleased to have contributions from a number of state supreme court chief justices, including: Chief Justice Randall T. Sheppard, Chief Justice Michael A. Wolff, Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer, Chief Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell, Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall, and Chief Justice W. Taylor.

The symposium and resulting publication are unique in their focus and will be widely read throughout the chambers of the nation's state supreme courts.

Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington, October 31, 2006

The inaugural William R. Stewart Lecture on Labor and Employment Law was held on October 31, 2006, at the Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington, featuring William B. Gould, IV, as the inaugural lecturer. Professor Gould is a past Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, and is currently the Charles A. Beardsley Professor of Law, Emeritus, at Stanford University. Professor Gould's lecture was entitled "Independent Adjudication, Political Process and the State of Labor-Management Relations: The Role of the National Labor Relations Board," and it will be published in the Spring 2007 issue of the Indiana Law Journal.

The Lecture series is funded by the William R. Stewart Memorial Fund for Labor and Employment Law. This fund has been established by the family and friends of William R. Stewart to celebrate his life and career and to support the program in labor and employment law at Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington. William R. Stewart was a distinguished alumnus of Indiana University School of Law, who worked for nearly four decades as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, including appointments as Deputy Assistant General Counsel and Chief Counsel. In the course of his career, William Stewart received numerous recognitions and awards, including the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service-the highest honor the Federal Government can bestow on a career civilian employee. Mr. Stewart was inducted into the Indiana University Academy of Law Alumni Fellows in 1999.
