A Guide for OneLs–Preparing to Start Law School

Coming to IU Law for the first time this fall?

We can help. Law school can be scary, but it’s not as bad as you think.  If you have any questions feel free to ask.  It never hurts to come in early and look around–introduce yourself to some professors, some support staff, and best of all, some librarians!  Knowing who can help is a great way to start any career.

Also, keep checking the BLAWg IN Bloom–we are going to keep offering suggestions for settling in.

Questionable Searches

From the AP – A new Justice Department report concludes that politics illegally influenced the hiring of career prosecutors and immigration judges, and largely lays the blame on top aides to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The report describes how the Justice Department used Lexis-Nexis for politically vetting career employees. Look at page 25 for the section on the use of Internet research on candidates for DOJ positions and the top of page 26 for the specific Lexis-Nexis search string used for Attorney General appointments.

The Nexis search that DOJ White House liaisons ran on job candidates is pretty telling!

New Request Delivery Service

Legal Books GraphicNo more trekking across campus! Patrons may now receive items from other IU libraries directly through IUCAT’s Request Delivery service. Most circulating materials can be obtained through Request Delivery. Items excluded from the service include non-circulating materials, such as reference books and periodicals, materials that are checked out, reserve and short-loan items.

To use Request Delivery:-

  • Log in to IUCAT.
  • Search for item and click on the Request Delivery link located on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • Select Bloomington Law Library from the drop-down box.
  • Select a date after which you will no longer need the item and click the Request Delivery button.
  • You will be informed by email when your book is ready to be picked up from the Law Library circulation desk. Delivery takes 2-4 days.
  • The My Account link (in the red toolbar at the top of the IUCAT home-page) allows patrons to review, renew, and cancel requests.

Go ahead and start requesting – so many wonderful library books are just a click away!
