Guide to U.S. Foreign Affairs (USFAC)
on Cd-rom

USFAC is a text CD-Rom, containing about 500 publications of the State Department related to foreign affairs. These include speeches, testimony, press conference, guides, reports, and articles from the journal Dispatch. All of the material dates between 1990 and 1992. Some of these publications may be found in paper in our library's collection with other State Department publications or in Dispatch (S 1.3/5:). This CD is produced by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Public Affairs.

GETTING STARTED:

Make the appropriate selection from the Database Main Menu screen.
Press ENTER

USING IT:

  1. At the USFAC menu press "1" to start the disc, or the appropriate number to get more information about USFAC.

  2. At the Search Screen, type your search phrase.

    For example, if you type:
    Somalia rescue = the computer will search for articles that contain either the term "Somalia" OR the term "rescue" or both.

    Somalia AND (on the next line) rescue = the computer will search only for articles that contain BOTH the term "Somalia" AND the term "rescue".
    "Somalia rescue" (on one line, within quotation marks)= the computer will search for articles that contain the PHRASE "Somalia rescue"

  3. To view the Table of Contents, press F4.

  4. To view the INDEX which lists all terms searchable on the disc, press F5.

  5. The search may be refined by using F6 to select a type of document, such as Dispatch articles.

  6. If you prefer, you can move down to Advanced Test Search and limit to a particular speaker (such as George Bush) or region (such as the Middle East).

  7. Once the search is complete, press to view a list of the documents that your search has retrieved. Use the cursor to select a document, then press .
