Guide to U.S. Government Periodicals Index (USGPI)

USGPI is a file CD-Rom, indexing over 180 periodicals published by the government. This CD is commercially published by Congressional Information Service (CIS). The periodical indexed include such diverse titles as Aging, Defense, FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, FDA Consumer, Humanities, and Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The indexing begins with October 1993 and updates are issued quarterly.

GETTING STARTED:

Make appropriate selection from menu.
Press ENTER

ENTERING A SEARCH:

  1. At the MAIN MENU press ENTER to begin a search. You may type in a term or combine terms with Boolean logic.

    For example, if you type:

    consumer protection = the computer will search only for articles that contain those two terms next to each other (treating them as a phrase).

    consumer OR protection = the computer will search for any articles that contain either of those terms or both.

    consumer AND protection = the computer will search only for articles that contain BOTH the term "consumer" and the term "protection".

    A thesaurus of all of the words that appear on the disc may be viewed by pressing , then type I. This may be helpful in making an initial selection of search terms.

    In addition, there is an excellent HELP MENU available with tips on navigating through the database, detailing research strategies and refining search queries. Options for further action are listed at the bottom of each screen.

  2. Select and type a search term(s), then press ENTER. Also, you may refine your search.

    For example: consumer [in title] = the computer will search only for articles that have the word "consumer" in the title.

    consumer [periodical identifier] = the computer will search only for articles in journals that have the word "consumer" in their titles.

  3. The computer will display a list of articles that meet your instructions. Move the cursor to an article citation that interests you and press ENTER.

  4. At this point you will be provided with more complete bibliographic information about the article. Note: Check the online catalog to see if journal is in the Law Library's collection or available from another I.U. library.

    FOR HELP:
    Press F1

    FINDING OPTIONS/MENU OF COMMANDS
    Press F2

    TO PRINT:
    Press F7
    Press ENTER twice.
    Select a format and press ENTER

    TO LEAVE THE DATABASE:
    Press F2
    Type Q
    Press ENTER
