RESEARCH SERVICES::

The reference librarians are available to assist you with your research needs. We provide a wide variety of reference services including locating materials, compiling bibliographies and legislative histories, and performing Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw or Internet searches. The reference staff is available to provide training to you in the use of our electronic resources. Additionally, the Library provides the following services to assist in your research interests:

  • Acquisitions List
The Law Library’s monthly acquisitions list is available on the website and in a public file on the network. An e-mail message will be sent to you when it becomes available. If you wish to see something from these lists, leave it for the Courier, and the items will be delivered to your office.
  • Automatic routing of journals
If you want to receive all issues of a specific periodical on a regular basis, contact Dick Vaughan or a member of the reference staff, and these journals will be checked out and sent to you as they arrive in the Library.
  • Current Awareness Service
At the beginning of each semester, Liz Larson will contact you in order to complete an interest profile which describes your particular research needs. Once the interest profile is compiled, the reference librarians will scan all new journals, books and documents as they arrive, and those materials relating to your interest will be automatically routed to you.
  • Electronic Clipping Services
Both Lexis and Westlaw provide the ability to set up an electronic clipping service to enable you to retrieve current items of interest automatically through email. For more information about this or for assistance in setting up an electronic clipping service, contact Peter Hook.
  • Legal Scholarship Network (LSN)
LSN facilitates the distribution of scholarly information relevant to legal, economics, and business scholars and practitioners by publishing a series of email abstracting journals of working papers and articles accepted for publication. Users may read the preprint articles online. LSN also publishes weekly professional announcements about meetings, calls for papers and special issues of journals, and job listings. For more information about this service, please contact Peter Hook.
  • Lexis and Westlaw
Faculty may access both Lexis and Westlaw from their office. An individual password is needed for each system. Contact Peter Hook for a password and for any individualized training or assistance you need.
  • Looseleaf Services
The Law Library subscribes to a large number of looseleaf services. The weekly highlights or digest portions of services in your field can be copied and sent to you on a regular basis. Contact Dick Vaughan for a list of services we receive in order to make your selections. If you are interested in reading the full opinion of cases discussed in these highlights, simply return them to the Library via the Courier with the case checked and your name included, and we will photocopy the opinion and send it to you. The cost of photocopying will be charged to your Law School account.
  • Research Assistant Training Program
If you have a research assistant, the reference librarians are always available to discuss your specific needs or train your assistant in more advanced methods of legal research. Please contact Liz Goldberg if you are interested in scheduling a training session for your research assistant. The Library can also arrange for your research assistant to check out books for you from other libraries on campus. If you have need to send your research assistant to other libraries, please contact Rebecca Bertoloni Meli about arranging for a proxy card to be issued.
  • SmartCILP
This subscription service provides automated personalized email delivery for segments of the Current Index to Legal Periodicals. Users of this service receive a weekly email informing them of new law review articles pertaining to subjects of their choosing. It is also possible to have the table of contents of individual issues of journals of your choosing sent to you via email as they are published. For more information about this service, contact Peter Hook.
  • Washington List
The Current Index to Legal Periodicals from the University of Washington (Washington List) is received electronically and placed in a public file on the network. As it is received, an e-mail message will be sent informing you of its availability. For assistance in using this service, please contact a member of the reference staff. If you wish to see an issue of a journal from this list, contact the Courier, and it will be delivered to your office.
  • Web-based and CD-ROM Services
The Library subscribes to numerous web-based and CD-ROM services. Many of the most heavily used indexes and full-text services are web-based and available in your office through the Library’s website. A complete list of the CD-ROM sources available is located at the circulation desk. Please contact Peter Hook for additional information and training in the use of these sources.

A small collection of interactive CD-ROM programs is also available for use in the Library. These programs are designed to teach legal skills by simulating real-life lawyering situations. The CD-ROMs are kept at the Circulation Desk. For more information on the specific CD-ROMs available and their use, please contact Peter Hook.
