9. Second Client Follow Up
After the hearing, the client should be given two copies of the protective order. Instruct the client that s/he should call you or the attorney with any questions or concerns.
While POP volunteers only assist clients in obtaining a protective order, many clients are often badly in need of other legal services, such as divorces or custody arrangements. While we cannot make referrals to specific members of the local bar, clients are advised to seek private counsel or, if income qualified, be referred to Legal Services of Indiana (LSI) or the Community Legal Clinic (CLC). Clients will also need non-legal support. All clients should be told about Middleway House and its various services. A list of services is included on the last page of this manual.
Review with the client how to effectively use the protective order. Also explain the renewal process.
Many cases that come to the Protective Order Project do not get this far. Clients may be declined our services for various reasons. Clients may decline our services after initially requesting them, or they may become impossible to contact. The judge may deny either the Emergency or the Permanent Protective Order. Be aware of this.
