EVENTS & LECTURES

INTERNATIONAL LAWYER SPEAKS TUESDAY
The International Law Society (ILS) will host Mr. Stephen Plopper, an attorney from the firm of Stephen Plopper & Associates in Indianapolis and Klineman, Rose & Wolf in Warsaw, Poland. Mr. Plopper specializes in international business transactions in Central and Eastern Europe.

The focus of his talk will be the "Legal Ramifications for International Business Transactions in Eastern Europe - the case of Poland." Mr. Plopper has been involved in the emerging markets of East Central Europe since the late 1980's and has advised many U.S. clients in their East European investments.

The talk will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 125. Refreshments will be provided.

DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN FELLOW WILL LECTURE THURSDAY
The Institute for Advanced Study presents a lecture by Judge Sarah Evans Barker. The lecture, "Sign on the Courthouse Door: 'Price, Speed, Quality Pick 2,'" will be Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ernie Pyle Room 220 at the School of Journalism (IUB).

Judge Barker, a graduate of IU, has served as a legal assistant to a senator, as a private practitioner, and as a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. In 1984 she was appointed U.S. district court judge for the Southern District of Indiana by President Reagan. Since January 1994, she has served as chief judge of the district.

In addition to her 15 years of service in the courtroom, Judge Barker has played a nationwide leadership role in the administration of federal courts. In 1988 she was elected to the U.S. Judicial Conference, the principal adminsitrative policy-making body of the federal judiciary.

Judge Barker will be a Distinguished Citizen Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study Feb. 17-19.

A reception will follow in the University Club, IMU, immediately after the lecture.

COUNSEL FOR NATIONAL NAACP TO SPEAK FRIDAY: CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE 21st CENTURY
Theodore Shaw, Deputy Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, will be at the Law School to discuss "Civil Rights in the 21st Century" on Friday, Feb. 18 in the Faculty Lounge at Noon.

Mr. Shaw is a renowned speaker has been an advocate of civil rights since his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. He has taught at the University of Michigan School of Law.

ACADEMY OF LAW ALUMNI FELLOWS PROFILE

Who are those people whose photographs are on the first-floor wall? In this series of profiles, we introduce you to the members of the Academy of the Law Alumni Fellows. The Fellows are the recipients of the highest honor the Law School bestows on its alums. We hope that each profile will help you reflect on the successes of our alumni as well as some possibilities that are ahead for you.

JEANNE SIEDEL MILLER
Although her undergraduate record had earned her election to Phi Beta Kappa, it required a firm resolve for young Jeanne Siedel to take a seat in the law classrooms in Maxwell Hall, where the chairs around her were filled by returning GI's. She remained undaunted, graduating first in her class in 1948 after serving as articles editor of the Indiana Law Journal and having been elected to the Order of the Coif.

After marriage to a law school classmate, Mickey M. Miller, she set out to build a general practice among the farmers, businessmen and neighbors in her home community of New Haven, Indiana.

Jeanne Miller has been a force for change in the legal profession in Indiana. As a former president of the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum and through service over a decade on the Disciplinary Commission on the Indiana supreme Court, she has helped raise the standards of professional competence and the conduct of practitioners.

In her home county, she advanced the idea of a unified court system, drafted the Allen County Superior Court Act, and lobbied effectively for its enactment. She chaired state and national committees on judicial selection and administration of justice, and gave impetus to the movement of changing the selection of judges form partisan politics to selection by measured competence and retention through meritorious service.

Recognizing her outstanding and proven skills at governance, her colleagues selected her to become the

first woman president of the Indiana Bar Association in 1988.

Jeanne Miller has been vigorous in her efforts to improve the quality of the educational institutions of her home and state. She chaired the Allen County School Reorganization Committee and was president of her own district school board. To her alma mater she has been generous in giving help and guidance. She has served as a member of the Indiana University Board of Trustees and has been a director of the Indiana-Purdue Foundation at Ft. Wayne since 1971.

Jeanne Siedel Miller is a preeminent role model for the thousands of women assuming leadership in the legal profession and for all graduates of the Indiana University School of Law.

Ms. Miller became a Law Alumni Fellow in 1988.

JUDICIAL CLERKSHIP MERGE FILES
As some students go through the process of getting faculty recommendation letters for judicial clerkship applications, there are a few things to remember.

The merge file disks that are given to faculty secretaries must contain two merge fields for each judge one field for the name and mailing address, and the other for the salutation. In addition, the file must be in Word Perfect, either 6.1 or above. Unfortunately, Microsoft Word is not acceptable.

David Lankford in the Law Library computer lab can assist students in preparing a merge disk. It is not the secretary's responsibility to re-format or clean up improperly prepared disks. Please contact Chris Rodden with questions.

PATENT LAW INTERVIEW PROGRAM
Loyola University Chicago School of Law is hosting the 14th Annual Patent Law Interview Program on Aug. 3-5. Students who have an undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering or a technical science may want to consider registering for the program.

Registration forms, which are available in the job fair binder in Career Services, are to be turned in no later than Feb. 25. A student fee is required with the completed form.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

BAILIFFS NEEDED FOR MOOT COURT COMPETITION
Sign up sheets to serve as a bailiff in the Spring rounds of the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition will be posted on Moot Court bulletin board on Monday, Feb. 14.

Arguments will be held Feb. 21-23, and Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., and Mar. 2 at 7:00 p.m.

All non-moot court competitors are invited to serve as bailiffs and to attend any oral arguments.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

RESULTS IN IND. COURT OF APPEALS CASE FROM LAST FALL
Last Fall, the Indiana Court of Appeals heard arguments at the Law School in T.W. Thom Construction v. City of Jeffersonville. The case presented the issue whether the City's zoning regulations authorized a mobile home park in a general business zone. The trial court had entered summary judgment in favor of the mobile home park builder. The Court of Appeals reversed, the mobile home park is on hold, and the opinion can be found at 721 N.E. 2d 319 (Ind. App. 1999)
