EVENTS & LECTURES

CAN TWO WOMEN HAVE A BABY? FIND OUT HOW!
Paula Gordon White, Staff Attorney for Student Legal Services for Indiana University Bloomington, will be speaking about the process of gay adoption, such as how to do it, the struggles associated with it, the perception of the courts, and policy issues centering on this issue. The discussion, sponsored by OutLaw, will be Monday, Oct. 30, at Noon in Room 121. A brief Q & A session will follow.

Please bring your own lunch; snacks and drinks will be provided!

TRICK OR TREAT!
The annual Halloween celebration for children of students, faculty and staff will take place on Monday, Oct. 30. Office Trick or Treating starts at 4:30 p.m. All offices, library, and student organizations are welcome to participate. All children will receive evidence bags and will collect candy from offices bearing the "Mummy/Tort Victim" sign on the door. At 5:15 p.m. we assemble for parade and prizes in the Lobby. Every costume will receive a prize, some with legal themes (e.g., "most likely to cause emotional distress").

Please let us know if you would like trick or treaters to come around to visit your organization or office. (This means you will provide candy). Also we need volunteers to hand out prizes and awards in the Lobby. Please let us know if you will be bringing children. Please respond to Professor Aviva Orenstein (aorenste) or to Beth Caseman (bcaseman).

1L'S: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NOW TO DO WELL ON FINAL EXAMS
APALSA is presenting a discussion on "What First-Year Law Students Need to Know NOW If They Want to Do Well on Final Exams. Professor Gjerdingen will start his lecture at Noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in Room 121. Pizza and beverages will be provided.

HARRIS LECTURE ON NOV. 9
The 2000 Addison Harris Lecture will be presented on Thursday, Nov. 9, by Richard A. Epstein, the James Parker Hall Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago Law School. His lecture, "Intellectual Property: Old Boundaries and New Frontiers," will take place at Noon in the Moot Court Room. The lecture is open to the IU community and to the general public; a reception will follow in the faculty lounge. Further details will be published in the upcoming issue of ILA.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Kevin Brown will act as moderator for a program discussing Diversity and the Election held on behalf of Everest Organization and the Office of the Vice Chancellor and Vice President of Student Development and Diversity. The program will be on Nov. 1 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Wittenberger Auditorium.

Professor Hannah Buxbaum participated in the European Economic & Political Issues Workshop on Oct. 25 at SPEA. Her talk was entitled "Cooperative Regulatory Enforcement Between Europe and the United States."

Professor Sarah Jane Hughes was elected to membership in the American Law Institute at the ALI Council's most recent meeting.

Associate Dean Lauren Robel was presented with the Indiana State Bar Association's Women in the Law Recognition Award at the ISBA Dinner on Oct. 25 hosted by the Young Lawyers Section.

NEWS FROM THE RECORDER'S OFFICE

SPRING REGISTRATION
A listing of courses that have over-enrollment will be posted on the glass bulletin board on the ground floor sometime Monday, Oct. 30. Individual bump notices will be placed in your mailboxes late Tuesday afternoon, Oct 31.

DROP/ADD
Students may process schedule adjustments in the Recorder's Office, on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 1- 2. Additional schedule adjustments may be made in January during the first week of classes.

SCHEDULE UPDATES/ CLARIFICATIONS
B602 - Criminal Process II exam will be on Saturday, April 28, morning.

B729 - Antitrust Law will be offered as a "perspectives" requirement.

B780 - Comparative Criminal Law is a 2 hour course.

B792 - Internet Law is a 3 hour course.

L655 - Sem IP & Biotech also fulfills the "perspectives" requirement.

L724 - Sem in Law & Society of Japan may be taken for 2 or 3 credit hours, regarding of the degree you are working toward.

L738 - Sem in Employment Discrimination is 3 hours.

IMMUNIZATION RECORDS REQUIRED
The University Registrar's Office has notified our office that students will not be permitted to register who have not submitted a Student Immunization Record to their office. Our office is scheduled to enter spring registration on Nov. 6, so these documents need to be received prior to this registration date.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

FEDERALIST SOCIETY MEETING TUESDAY
The Federalist Society will be holding a general meeting Tuesday, Oct. 31

at 12:15 p.m. in Room 120. We will be discussing plans for our election

night party to be held at the Crazy Horse on, well, Election Night (Nov. 7).

THE CONTOURS OF GLOBALIZATION
On Thursday, Nov. 2 at 12:10 p.m. in Room 122, the International Law

Society presents a brown bag lecture by Dean Aman that will answer the

question, "What is Globalization, and What is All the Hype About Anyway?"

He will outline the various issues and debates concerning globalization

that will effect the future of international law and international

relations.

MOOT COURT COMPETITION IS CONTINUING
The 2000-2001 Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition is now in full swing. This year's issue is a hot one - involving drug interdiction road blocks

and the constitutional right to privacy. If you are a participant, this is a unique opportunity to have family and friends attend and support you. Finally, a sincere thanks to those of you who have shown your support by volunteering to bailiff.

If you are a non-participant, please plan to join us for one or more oral argument sessions. Thanks and see you there!

THE PRACTICE OF IP AS IMPACTED BY TECHNOLOGY
The Intellectual Property Law Group will host Chicago Patent Attorney Michael Greenfield of McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff on Nov. 14, at 12:15 p.m. in Room 120. The discussion will be on "The Practice of IP as Impacted by Technology." We invite all members, anyone interested in membership, anyone interested in IP, anyone interested in a great networking opportunity, and all faculty to attend the brown bag event. The first 30 people will receive a beverage and chips, so BYOBB.

THANKS TO THE LAW AND DRAMA SOCIETY
The Outreach for Legal Literacy Program and Professor Orenstein would like to thank the Law and Drama Society for all of their efforts to produce a fabulous play for our fifth-graders. We received fabulous feedback from the teachers and students, so your time spent practicing instead of studying was greatly appreciated! A special thanks to Liz Gabig for acting as liaison between the two groups. We could not have done it without you!

INVIGORATED: SIX SORE STUDENTS!
On Sunday, Oct. 22 six law school students headed to Chicago to run the Chicago Marathon. Those were Casey Kobi, Bob Lattas, Matt Lloyd, Andy Nill, John Reale, and Kelly Powis. Everyone finished and all are very sore.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CLERKSHIP LETTERS
Students who are applying for clerkships should be aware of the following guidelines in order for their recommendation letters to be sent in a timely fashion. Listings of judges and addresses should be in a WordPerfect Merge file. Files submitted in any other format will be returned to the student for conversion. Two fields only should be used, Field 1 should contain the Judges name and complete address exactly as it should appear in the letter. Field 2 should contain the correct salutation, i.e., Chief Judge Edwards. If you have any questions about the clerkship process, please see Career Services and they will be happy to help you.

SAVE YOPLAIT YOGURT TOPS
BLSA and the Intellect are holding a Yoplait Yogurt top drive in order to support Breast Cancer research. If you, your friends, or your family eat Yoplait Yogurt, please keep the tops. We will have a drop box outside of the BLSA office on the ground level of the law school (across from the SLA Bookstore). Please aid us in our efforts to support Breast Cancer by bringing in your Yoplait Yogurt lids and dropping them in the collection box.

To schedule classrooms in the law building, send email to bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@ exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an email address. Confirmations will be sent by reply email.

AUDIO - VIDEO SERVICES
Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by email.
