THE PROFESSOR AND THE CANARY

Margaret Somerville has been known to flap her arms like a bird in front of an audience of hundreds to make her point, which is this: Healthcare, or the way a society approaches the ethical and financial dilemmas healthcare raises, is like a canary in the coal mine of the future. If healthcare doesn't thrive, it may be an advance warning that something is rotten in the state of the nation. This idea is at the heart of Somerville's forthcoming book, The Ethical Canary, in which she discusses the ethical implications of the medical decisions we make about birth, death, and everything in between.

Somerville is a professor in both law and medicine at McGill University, Montreal, where she studies legal and ethical questions that arise in medicine and science. As the Gale Professor of Law at McGill, she is the first woman in Canada to hold a named chair in law, and she is the founding director of the McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics, and Law. This semester, she is also the George P. Smith II Distinguished Visiting Professor at the IU Law School. During the first portion of her visit, which will end on Feb. 22, she will present an informal faculty colloquium (on Monday, Feb. 19) and meet with student groups and faculty from other departments. In April, when she returns, she will give a public lecture and participate in a panel discussion about her most recent book, The Ethical Canary. Somerville has an extensive national and international publishing and speaking record. She often speaks to large audiences, especially television and radio audiences, on topics that raise complex legal and ethical problems for society. She is a public policy consultant to governments and non-governmental bodies, such as the Global Programme on AIDS of the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, the United Nations Human Rights Secretariat in Geneva, and law reform commissions in Canada and Australia, and she has been a speaker (including keynote) at UNESCO conferences in Paris. She has served on many editorial boards, advisory boards and boards of directors, including the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics, and is an ethics advisor to the Auditor General of Canada. She has also been active in the clinical sphere, serving on clinical and research ethics committees and consulting for McGill University Teaching Hospitals. Somerville's public talks will be announced in upcoming issues of the ILA.

Kimm Walton, author of Guerrilla Tactics for Getting the Legal Job of Your Dreams, will present a free seminar on behalf of the Career Services Office on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Kimm has talked with thousands of employers all over the country and she will share with you what she has learned from them, plus interviewing techniques, outstanding cover letters, great resumes, and much more.

UPCOMING JLAP "DRUNK & DISORDERLY" OFFERS OHIO CLE CREDIT
Foster Inn of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, in cooperation with Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program, presents Drunk & Disorderly II: Character, Fitness, Discipline & Ethics. Tuesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. The speakers are : Donald R. Lundberg, Executive Secretary of the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, will discuss prosecution of disciplinary charges; Kevin P. McGoff, a leading disciplinary defense counsel in Indianapolis, will discuss defense against disciplinary charges; Susan B. Eisenhauer, JLAP Executive Director, will discuss how JLAP can help lawyers and law students in distress; and Terry L. Harrell, JLAP Clinical Director, will discuss alcoholism, addiction, depression, stress, and other mental health issues.

Each speaker will present for 10-15 minutes, and then all will take questions from the floor. There will be fruit, cookies, brownies and coffee. CATS, Bloomington's cable access channel, will tape the event for its programming rotation. For those applying to the Ohio state bar, please note that this program will provide attendees with a 1-hour CLE credit for Alcohol Education in Ohio.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Fred Cate spoke at a congressional briefing on "The Public Record: Social Security Numbers and Sensible Policies for the Information Age" in Washington; on "The Price of Privacy" to the Iowa Bankers Association's annual legislative dinner in Des Moines; and on "Privacy and Public Records" at the North Carolina Press Association's 76th Annual Winter Institute in Chapel Hill. He was listed by the Indiana Business Journal in its annual "40 Under 40" edition.

Professor Aviva Orenstein attended the Fifth Circuit Bar Conference in New Orleans on Feb. 9, where she discussed civility on appeal on a panel with the Honorable Robert Parker. In addition, Professor Orenstein taught a three hour workshop on effective brief writing.

NEWS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

PARENTS & PARTNERS DAY
On Saturday, March 3, students will have a chance to give their near and dear a taste of life at the Law School. Faculty will conduct classes specifically for partners and parents of law student, hold make-up classes at which guests are welcome, and give lectures on topics of interest to the laity. Look for more details in next week's ILA.

GRADUATION COMMITTEE MEETING

The senior graduation committee will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 12:15, in room 216.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
There will be an informational meeting about studying abroad next year at 12:15 on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Room 216. The School offers opportunities to study in London, Paris, Spain, and Germany.

FAFSA RENEWAL
It's that time again! If you are planning to be a student for the 2001-2002 academic year, you need to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1, 2001, to apply for federal financial aid. If you have your federal Personal Identification Number, or PIN, you may file a Renewal FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. "Renewal" means your information from filing last year will be presented to you on-line to update, rather than filing from scratch. If you do not have your federal PIN, which serves as your electronic signature, you may file a 2001-2002 FAFSA either on-line (you'll print a signature page to return) or by using a paper form. To have your data sent to IU Bloomington, please use School Code #001809.

NEW THIS YEAR: You will receive an e-mail confirmation from the FAFSA Processor once you file the FAFSA on-line. Filing on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov is still the fastest and least error-prone way to file. If you have already tried to file on-line but have been frustrated by poor response time, a report recently stated that the FAFSA Processor has doubled capacity as of Jan. 5, 2001, so it should work better now. You do need to have your federal tax information from 2000 available to complete the FAFSA, but you do not have to have filed your taxes yet.

PERKINS LOANS
The March 1 date is especially important if you want to apply for a Perkins Loan. There is limited funding so only those who apply by March 1 are considered. In addition, you must have borrowed on the Perkins loan previously to be awarded.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS

LAW/SPEA ASSOCIATION MEETING WEDNESDAY
The Law/SPEA Student Association will hold its first meeting of the semester on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 5:00 p.m., upstairs at Nick's. Among other items, the group will discuss the possibility of inviting Judge Cynthia Ayers as an alumni speaker and fundraising/scholarship options for joint degree students. Former SPEA Dean Jim Barnes will also introduce his idea of organizing a joint degree capstone class. All current joint degree students are encouraged to attend. Students interested in one of the joint law/SPEA degrees are also welcome.

SINGING FOR SUMMER SALARIES PILF FUNDRAISER
How better to repay one of our esteemed professors for the fun we had last semester than to choose them to serenade the entire law school? For the next two weeks, there will be jars with the professors' names on them in the lobby during lunch. Just drop whatever money you can spend into the jar of the professor you would most like to see sing to us and leave your suggestions for the song. The professor with the most money in their jar on Feb. 27 will have to stand in the front of the Moot Court room and sing whatever song we have chosen. All we have to do is come and watch. All the money raised becomes PILF Summer Fellowships and goes directly back to our classmates who are interested in low paying public interest careers and have chosen to take non-paying, or low-paying public interest positions for the summer. Donate your cash, enjoy the show, and support PILF!

Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event.
