The Office of Career & Professional Development offers two information sessions on upcoming spring break networking opportunities. The first will be held Monday, Feb. 1, from noon to 1 p.m., while the second session (a repeat of Monday's) will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Interested in learning about careers in public interest law? PILF and OCPD are sponsoring a public interest law information session and reception on Thursday, Feb. 4. The fair, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will be followed by a reception and networking opportunities.
It is time to start planning your spring break and the Office of Career & Professional Development is here to help. Once again OCPD is setting up spring break trips to Washington, D.C. and New York that will allow students to meet employers. Dean Michael Keller will provide details concerning the trips — including an outline of potential visits — and take your suggestions on where you want to go and answer any questions. This information session will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 124. RSVP on Symplicity. A repeat of this event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, for those unable to attend Monday's session.
The POP will be holding a meeting on Tuesday at noon in room 122. Food will be served as we discuss POP updates and success stories from last semester. We would also like to get any feedback you might want to share. If you are interested in volunteering for POP but did not attend training at the beginning of the school year, this is a great opportunity to learn more about what we do. If there is enough interest, we can arrange to have another condensed training session. The meeting should last about 30 minutes. We hope to see you there!

The Office of Career & Professional Development's Career Choices Series continues on Thursday by featuring alumni currently working in the public interest and legal aid fields. Come hear from Josh Abel, JD'05, and Tom Frohman, JD'83, as they discuss their experiences working outside of traditional law firms. Thursday's event takes place from noon to 1 p.m. in room 122, and will be limited to the first 85 students who RSVP on Symplicity.
Join the Public Interest Law Foundation student team and OCPD to learn about legal careers in the public interest realm during the PILF Information Fair and Reception. Thursday's information fair will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in room 121 and the faculty lounge. The information fair will be followed by a networking reception with refreshments.
The annual Women's Law Caucus Auction takes place Friday, Feb. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bluebird. The proceeds benefit the Middle Way House and the Protective Order Project. Auction packages include "greatest hits" of favorites from years past. Assemble your bidding groups now and come out to bid and support a great cause. The packages are listed on Facebook. Take advantage of the event's discussion feature; it's great for finding group members. There will also be about $4,000 of gift certificates and merchandise from Bloomington businesses available for low "buy it now" prices, but the faculty packages really make this a one-of-a-kind event. The Bluebird will have specials and pizza available, as well as free Qdoba quesadillas on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6 p.m.

The Federalist Society invites you to a head-to-head debate — sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation — between two outstanding economists: Fred Smith, president and founder of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and Martin Spechler, PhD, professor of economics at Indiana University. The event, on Monday, Feb. 8, at noon, will be moderated by Indiana Law Professor Timothy Lynch. The panel will be held in the Moot Court Room.

The Black Law Students Association, Federalist Society, and Health Law Society will co-host a debate panel on health care, sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation. Is President Obama's plan sound policy or bad medicine? Debaters will include Doug Bandow, senior fellow at the Cato Institute; Neville Cox, director of post graduate teaching and learning at Trinity College Dublin School of Law; and Indiana Law Professor David P. Fidler. The panel, at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 16, will be moderated by Indiana Law Professor Yvonne Cripps. The event will take place in the Moot Court Room and lunch will be provided.

Love is in the air! The Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) will be selling Valentine's Day grams from Monday, Feb. 1, to Tuesday, Feb. 9, during the noon lunch hour. We will place the Gram in the mailbox of your Valentine on Thursday, February 11th. A portion of the proceeds will go to Haiti relief efforts.
Amanda Elizondo, Kyle Cassidy, and Katelyn Conroy, all 2Ls, participated in the Williams Institute Moot Court Competition at UCLA on Jan. 30. The students' participation was supported by Lambda Law and the LGBT Alumni Advisory Board. The Williams Institute Moot Court Competition is the only national competition dedicated exclusively to the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity law. The competition provides an opportunity for competitors to write an appellate brief on a current legal topic and to argue the case before a panel of judges. The competition is designed to promote and recognize the finest oral and written advocacy on a significant problem in sexual orientation and gender identity law. This year's problem questioned whether a law that allows doctors to refuse to provide gender transition-related services to transgender persons on religious grounds is a violation of either the Equal Protection Clause or the Establishment Clause.
The Christian Legal Society has changed its Bible study time for this semester. CLS is holding weekly Bible study and prayer on Tuesdays at noon in room 215 of the Law School. The admissions office is expecting an increase in the number of prospective student visitors this semester and will need additional assistance from tour guides. Tour guide responsibilities include escorting prospective students to a class and providing a tour of the Law School building. This is a great way to participate in the building of next year's class. Sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), this writing competition on copyright law is open to all second- and third-year students at Indiana Law. Two awards ($600 and $250) may be given at each participating law school, and those winning papers will then be forwarded on to the national competition. Additional writing competitions are posted on the contests board across from room 022. A number of Indiana Law students have won previous writing competitions with awards as great as $4,000.
All students who reported pro bono hours during the fall 2009 semester should have received an email indicating total hours reported for fall 2009. As a reminder: to receive graduation recognition, current 3Ls must report a minimum of 20 pro bono hours for the 2009-10 school year.
