Commencement and Recognition Festivities
May 3 and 4, 2013

The IU Maurer School of Law Graduation Ceremony will be held Saturday, May 4. The Law School does not participate in the University Ceremony at Assembly Hall on either Friday, May 3, or Saturday, May 4.

Law School Party (Friday, May 3)

Come celebrate with family and classmates!

Open House for graduates, families, and friends in the school library from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3th. Food and beverages will be provided free of charge in the reception area. A jazz combo will provide music in the atrium area of the library. The winners of numerous class awards will be announced from 9:15 to 10:00 p.m. Those receiving awards will be notified before the event. Dress is casual to business casual.

Luncheon Reception (Saturday, May 4)

Convention Center, 302 South College Avenue (College & Third), 11:00 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Tickets are required.

Generous parking is available about one block south of the Convention Center, off College Avenue. There is no charge for parking.

Adequate tabling and seating will be available for everyone at the same time. The buffet service will continue (with four consecutive double sided buffet lines) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., ticket holders may arrive at any point during that time period and stay until 2:15 p.m. A professional photographer will be available for family portraits.

No tickets or reservations necessary—plenty of seating for all—doors open at 2:15 p.m.

Professional pictures and a video of the ceremony will be available for purchase. The photo company will contact Graduates about them.

Notes
  1. Parking (no sticker needed) is available in the Jordan Garage off the circle drive on N. Jordan Ave.
  2. Programs will be distributed at the entrance to the IU Auditorium.
  3. Seating is on a first come basis. There always is adequate room for all. Handicapped and wheelchair seating and entry are available. The doors to the Auditorium proper will open at 2:15 p.m.
  4. An organist will play several pieces before the ceremony begins as well as the processional and recessional pieces.

  5. Graduates should report to the table on the north side of the Auditorium steps (outside) and then proceed to the outside area north of the Auditorium by 2:40 p.m. to prepare for the procession. (In the case of inclement weather, Graduates should report to the south lobby area by 2:40 p.m. to prepare to march in at 3:00 p.m.) Ushers will provide directions regarding the march and answer questions. Graduates will sit in a reserved area in the front rows as a group. (Seating is not alphabetical or by any other special arrangement. Basically, line up next to someone you wish to sit by.) Family and spectators will fill the seats behind the graduates and faculty will sit on stage.

  6. Each Graduate will carry his or her hood into the Auditorium on their left arm. Those who will be graduating with tentative honors will wear fourragères. The Recorder will notifiy the recipients and distribute the fourragères in the weeks leading up to the Ceremony.
  7. During the "Introduction of the Graduates" section of the program, as each Graduate ascends the steps to the stage, he or she will present a name card to Dean Matthews or Dean Davis. Name cards will be available for Graduates at tables outside by the steps or in the lobby before the ceremony begins—PRINT BOLDLY THE FULL NAME YOU WANT TO BE ANNOUNCED.

    After ascending to the stage platform and presenting their name card, Graduates will step immediately to one of two "hooding" stations where they will be quickly hooded. Dean Davis will announce Graduates in the LLM, MCL, and SJD programs first, then Dean Matthews will announce the JD Graduates. Each Graduate will receive congratulations and a handshake from Dean Buxbaum and Representative Hamilton. After crossing the stage, an usher will direct Graduates to return to their seats. A professional photographer will take pictures and videotape the proceedings for later purchase.

  8. At the end of the ceremony, the Graduates will march out behind the faculty. The ceremony is expected to end between 4:40 and 4:45 p.m.
  9. Caps, gowns, and hoods must be returned to a special table to the north of the Fountain outside the Fine Arts Building. In the event of bad weather, caps, gowns, and hoods should be returned to a table immediately inside the Fine Arts Building. A cap/gown/hood order form or receipt is required for return. Do not take apparel to the Fieldhouse as some material from the University has indicated.
  10. Diplomas will be mailed ten to twelve weeks after the graduation date to the ‘Student Home’ address listed in OneStart. Please contact the IU Registrar for all Diploma-related matters.

  11. Graduates’ IU e-mail accounts will be disabled within weeks after graduation if no action is taken. Please visit UITS to learn how to retain your IU e-mail account.

  12. Although the Graduation Ceremony will take place on May 4, the Official Graduation Date that will appear on your diploma (and should be used for all bar-related documents) is May 3, 2013.

Cap/Gown/Hood Ordering Information

All candidates for degrees must wear custom IU apparel at the Graduation Ceremony. Gowns are rented, not purchased, and must be returned immediately after the ceremony. Students may keep their caps and tassels, but Law students must return rented hoods with their rental gowns.

Credit or Debit Cards Only: Payment is due at the time apparel is ordered. Checks and cash will not be accepted.

Charges

Doctoral/JD: $88.20 (+7% sales tax) through March 22 (price will go up after this date)

A doctoral cap and gown is appropriate for all Law School candidates, which includes both JDs and Graduate Students.

If You Miss the Deadline to Order...

Online orders close Friday, March 29, 2013. Students who fail to order by March 29 may rent a cap and gown during distribution week, April 29 - May 2. Caps and gowns will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Available sizes may vary, and lines can be long. Late fees will be charged.

You must have a picture ID to pick up your apparel. If someone else is picking it up for you, they must have a copy of the receipt you received either in person or via email, and a note from you indicating they have your permission to collect your cap and gown.

Graduation Invitations and Diploma Frame Purchase

Graduation Ceremony Invitations and diploma frames can be ordered from the TIS Bookstore. Law diplomas are 16 by 20 inches (large), so make sure you order that size. Orders may be placed over the phone (1-800-238-1229) or online. (Do not order invitations from the HERFF JONES company, the Cap, Gown, and Hood vendor, as those invitations will not specify our Ceremony correctly.)
