Through the Nonprofit Legal Clinic (NPLC), second- and third-year law students develop professional skills through the representation of nonprofit entities. The clinic:
The 3 credit hour clinic offers educational components and interdisciplinary program building within Indiana Law’s three constituent communities: the School of Law, Indiana University, and the state of Indiana. The clinic bridges the gap for students between curriculum and practice in a client-based environment. At IU, the clinic has opportunities to collaborate with other centers, degree programs, and interdisciplinary programs. In Indiana, the clinic aspires to become a resource for the nonprofit community by offering a service to clients while educating students.
The NPLC helps to cultivate at an early stage of the students’ careers the legal skills necessary for transaction-based practice, as well as to instill in them an understanding of the role of nonprofit entities in the economy and in the legal world. Students who wish to develop the broad skill set necessary to serve as counsel to an organization will find the clinic useful in its scope and range of transactional activities.
Skills honed through work in the clinic are applicable to legal skills used in other professional contexts:
As in real-world practice, students work both individually and in teams. Many nonprofit entities are corporations, and students will be working with clients who are as visionary as their counterparts in the for-profit realm.
During the first six weeks of the semester, class will meet for four hours each week. After that, class will meet two hours each week, in addition to a weekly individual supervision meeting. Students should expect to spend 12 to 15 hours per week on clinical matters.
Accepted students will take the one-semester clinical course and earn three credits. Clinic enrollment is limited to six students each semester. Before the program begins, students should have taken at least one of the following three classes:
Interested students should submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of interest to Professor Cindy Lott. Students must have completed half of the credit hours required for graduation.
