Health Law Society (HLS)

Started in 2005, the Health Law Society provides a forum for IU-Bloomington Law students to learn more about current issues in health law and to network with professionals in the field. Affiliated with the American Health Lawyer's Association, the Health Law Society aims to connect students to the broader legal world of which we will soon be part.

Updated 2.24.08

  1. We have several upcoming events, and encourage everyone to join us.
  2. We have described some of this year’s past events/accomplishments to give you a sense of what is possible for next year. Events and programs are direct results of suggestions from our members and supporters; so, if you have an idea for something you would like to see/do/learn, please let us know!
  3. Ideas for next year and HLS contact information.

1. Upcoming events – Mark your calendars:

Tuesday, March 18th - Hall Render Young Attorney's Panel

Last year’s panel was so popular, we’ve decided to repeat it: Please join us for a panel discussion with attorneys from the excellent healthcare law firm Hall-Render . They will speak about their experiences and answer questions from the audience. Lunch will be served. Don’t miss it!

Saturday, March 29th - Relay for Life

Relay For Life

We will be sponsoring a team for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the proceeds of which fund research and treatment to fight against cancer. Whether you like to walk, run, volunteer, or cheer on others, there are many different ways to help. And, it’s fun! The relay lasts for 24 hours, and walkers/runners sign up for different time slots. People often walk or run together, and the camaraderie and show of solidarity in the fight against cancer are what really make the day commemorative.

Whether it’s in support of a loved one or of others’ loved ones, come out and help us. You can join our team of walkers/runners, or sign up to volunteer, or come out and be present to show support.

Saturday, March 29th - Spring Law Day

Spring Law Day is when newly admitted JD students come to the law school to meet prospective new classmates and get to know our law school community.

The Health Law Society will be tabling during the Student Organization Fair (beginning at 12:30 p.m.) to inform new students about our activities and share our enthusiasm for the upcoming year. Please feel free to join us in tabling or in sharing your perspective with any students you meet that day.

2. This year’s past events/accomplishments:

  1. Health Law Society 2007-2008 Kickoff/Benefit at Upland.

Thanks to all who attended the event at Upland Brewery. The event was a huge success for HLS, as many people attended to enjoy the brewery tours and Professor Baude's lecture on beer and the law. As a result of this event, we now have funds which will help us plan more programs and activities for this year and future years. In addition, we welcomed several new members.

  2. Sent students to the first annual Health Law Student Conference in Pittsburgh.

With the assistance of our career office, we were able to send several Health Law Society members to the First Annual Health Law Student Conference, hosted by the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics (ASLME) and University of Pittsburgh Law School. The students reported that the conference was excellent, as it provided an opportunity both to hear lectures from professionals in many different areas of healthcare law (such as in program development, small law firms, consulting firms, public health agencies, etc.) and to network with the distinguished speakers and other law students. The conference will be co-hosted by a different law school each year; next year, it will likely be hosted by Case Western – an even closer destination! For anyone interested in learning about healthcare law, the conference is a wonderful opportunity. We hope you will consider attending next year. In the meantime, you can learn more about the conference here, and about ASLME in general here.

  3. Printed and sold second edition of our popular "Briefs from the Kitchen" cookbook.

Our updated and reprinted cookbook helped us raise funds for future Health Law Society events and lunches. The cookbook is full of healthy, easy-to-prepare recipes submitted by our students, faculty, and staff.

  4. Hosted Dr. Stone from Hoosiers for Common Sense Health Plan.

Dr. Stone is a local and state leader in championing a commonsensical approach to healthcare. He advocates with the Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan and with the national organization Physicians for a National Health Program. He gave a fantastic presentation about the problems in our healthcare system today and answered questions from the crowd. His PowerPoint presentation can be found here [PDF].

  5. Sent students to former Dept. of Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary/In-house Counsel Alex Azar’s speech at IUPUI.

IUPUI’s Health Law Society hosted Alex M. Azar, current Senior Vice President at Eli Lilly and past counsel and deputy secretary of the Dept. of Health and Human Services – and they generously invited us! Two HLS members attended and heard Mr. Azar’s thoughts about the different political parties’ views of healthcare and the problems inherent in our current system. We are working to get a copy of his lecture/PowerPoint and hope to post it on this website soon.
