Inmate Legal Assistance Project
The Inmate Legal Assistance Project offers students a unique opportunity to sharpen their practical legal skills, while providing valuable free legal aid to inmates at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, IN. The organization makes bi-monthly trips to the penitentiary where, with the guidance of a local attorney, the members assist inmates on legal issues ranging from tort law claims to habeas corpus petitions. Volunteers gain practical experience performing legal research, drafting legal memoranda, preparing client letters and similar tasks. This experience is valuable for any student, not just those interested in criminal law, as the practical skills and knowledge that volunteers obtain will prove valuable in any field of law.
