Tenants Assistance Project
A program of Indiana University's School of Law, the Tenant Assistance Project (TAP) provides legal help at the Justice Building to tenants facing an immediate threat of eviction. Staffed by law students under the supervision of an attorney, TAP offers quality one-time legal information, advice, and representation. TAP wants to prevent homelessness in Monroe County by educating tenants about their legal rights.
Services
TAP will provide advice to tenants currently not receiving advice or representation. TAP provides the following services:
- Screening - Determining what the client needs and wants.
- Advice - Offering a short advice session which will explain the options open to the client, and, if necessary, refer the client to other service providers or social service agencies.
- Intensive advice and instructions - Providing more information to tenants on how to represent themselves in court and/or how to negotiate with the opposing party.
- Negotiating - Negotiating on behalf of the tenant with the opposing party before the eviction hearing.
- In-court representation - Appearing with the tenant in front of the judge and helping the tenant present the facts and legal defenses.
- Full representation - Referring clients who need additional legal assistance to a legal organization, like Indiana Legal Services, with which TAP has relationships. (There is no guarantee that an attorney or organization will take the case.)
For more information: Please note that TAP only offers assistance when project representatives are present at the Justice Building. TAP does not provide legal help or referrals during other times.
