Helping the Next Generation of Law Students
Geoffrey Slaughter, JD’89

Geoffrey Slaughter recalls his first oral argument, just a few years out of law school, before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. “All twelve judges were assembled en banc. Although I was scared to death, I withstood aggressive questioning from the usual suspects and was still standing when the red light came on,” he says. “I realized then how much I enjoyed the exchange—the conversation, really—of an oral argument. The preparation is hard work, but a successful delivery is a highly rewarding professional experience.”

Now a partner in the Indianapolis office of Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, Slaughter loves his job. “I’m a litigator, with an emphasis in appellate work. I love to write and enjoy the intellectual challenge of presenting sometimes complex legal and factual issues to a panel of busy, generalist appellate judges. It’s very satisfying work.”

Why I love my job: “Because of the intellectual challenge. I get to work with really smart colleagues in tackling important issues for our clients and crafting arguments in a way most likely to persuade an appellate court to accept our clients’ positions.”

Ah, the student life: “I miss being a student—learning for its own sake and, in my case, anyway, the lack of responsibility that it implied. I have really fond memories of those days.”

On staying involved with Indiana Law: “I’m a firm believer in giving back. My legal education has opened many doors and opportunities—both personal and professional—for which I’m grateful. I want to do my part to help the next generation of law students fulfill their own aspirations.”
