The Technology Environment

The Law School is technology-friendly. It benefits from the information and computing technology resources of the Bloomington campus but adds resources just for law students and faculty.

The First Thing

Before you can access anything, you will need an account. If you're admitted or work here, you can create your own account using the one-stop One Start portal.

Computers, Networks and Printers

Networking--whether wired or wireless--is everywhere. Your laptop computer will connect to the Internet from just about anywhere in the Law School. Every lecture hall seat is wired for power, as is every carrel in the Law Library. Exams are often offered electronically. In fact, we're so laptop-friendly that we require students to have one. Of course, if you prefer to use a desktop computer in a lab setting, the Law Library has computer labs for the exclusive use of law students—with full-time support staff. The labs are equipped with high capacity printers, and students have a generous annual printing allotment.

E-mail and File Storage

Students and faculty get e-mail with a generous 100MB mailbox, and ample space in OnCourse to store their work files.

Research Tools

Law students and faculty have free access to many Internet-based resources. You'll probably start with fundamental legal research tools like Lexis and Westlaw. Because learning to use those tools is so important, training in their use is integrated into the first-year legal research and writing curriculum. Many other databases are provided by our top-rated Law Library or the Indiana University Libraries.

Software

Your software shelf will be well-stocked at Indiana University. The Computing Connection at the Indiana Memorial Union can sell you about any software you'd want, usually steeply discounted.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional (the only supported Windows) is $10.

Keep your computer safe from virus and spy software with the $5 IUWare CD Or visit iuware.indiana.edu for free downloads of antivirus and spyware detection and removal software.

Corel's Word Perfect Office is $10 and Microsoft's Office is $25. Or download either office suite from iuware.indiana.edu.
