New Bankruptcy Course

1Ls and 2Ls are invited to meet Judge Basil H. Lorch III, JD'74, Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana, from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room 120 to learn more about a new course for the fall semester 2007, B631, Advanced Bankruptcy (Business Reorganization in Chapter 11). This 2-credit-hour course meets Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will be taught by Judge Lorch and James M. Carr, JD'75, chair of the Commercial, Financial, and Bankruptcy Services Group of Baker & Daniels LLP in Indianapolis. The course covers the full range of issues related to the bankruptcy reorganization of business entities under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code. Screening: Who Killed the Electric Car?

The American Constitution Society will be screening the film Who Killed the Electric Car? at 8 p.m. in the Student Lounge. The film is a documentary about the development, commercialization, and decline of General Motor's electric car in the United States in the 1990s, particularly in southern California. With current societal reliance on oil and the advance of global warming, please join us for this timely screening followed by discussion and debate.


PDP Sponsors Ethics Week Talk

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) is sponsoring its annual Ethics Week talk at noon in room 122. This year, Professor Charles Geyh, who has written extensively on the judiciary, will speak about judicial ethics and how they apply to new lawyers. How can newly minted attorneys know when a judge has crossed the line? What can he or she do about it? The talk will last about an hour with time for Q&A, and pizza will be provided. "Women's Perspectives on Careers in the Law"

The Feminist Law Forum presents "Women's Perspectives on Careers in the Law" from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 122. The panel features Judge Teresa Harper of the 8th Circuit Court of Monroe County; Philippa Guthrie, JD 91, general counsel of the Indiana University Foundation; Kathy Osborn, JD 99, associate at Baker & Daniels; Mary Ann Habeeb, director of Criminal Investigations at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management; and Laura Daghe, professor of Legal Research and Writing and former member of the litigation section at Ice Miller. Each panelist will speak on their perspective as a woman lawyer, and then we will open it up for questions.

Socctoberfest in the Spring

Socctoberfest, which was postponed in October due to rain, will begin at 4:45 p.m. on Fields 1 and 2 at Karst Park. This co-ed event is for "athletes" of all ability levels. After the games, which will end at approximately 6:30 p.m., we will have a cookout in the area adjacent to the soccer fields. Participants, fellow students, and family are all welcome to attend. Student Professional Enrichment Auction

The 2007 Spring Student Professional Enrichment Auction (SPEA) is in the Indiana Memorial Union Alumni Hall. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. and the live auction begins at 8 p.m. The auction raises scholarship monies for SPEA graduate students' unfunded internships and professional development opportunities. This elegant, entertaining event is for the enjoyment of alumni, faculty, staff, current and prospective students, and the greater university community, and is produced solely by current SPEA graduate students!

Professor Sarah Jane Hughes chaired a panel at the American Bar Association Spring Meeting on the evolving regulation of stored value and e-money in the European Union. A particular focus of the panel was the EU's creation of a special money transmitter law that places entities between "bank charters" and those for "money service businesses" such as check cashers and the like.

On March 21, Professor Mark Need gave a CLE presentation titled "The Lawyer's Role in Developing a Business Plan" for the Indianapolis Bar Association.


Presidential Power in the Age of Terror Symposium

IU's Center for Law, Society and Culture examines current debates about presidential power in the United States during its spring symposium at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, in the Moot Court Room. IU Political Science Professor William Scheuerman will deliver the keynote address, "Presidentialism and Emergency Powers After 9/11." IU Law Professor Dawn Johnsen and IU History Professor Nick Cullather will offer commentaries and conclude with an audience discussion.

SBA Hosts Spring Golf Tournament

The Student Bar Association (SBA) hosts its Spring Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at Eagle Pointe. The cost is $30 per golfer. The format will be a four-man scramble. Save the date and watch for more details.

"Polish-German Post-Memory: Aesthetics, Ethics, Politics"

More than 40 scholars of Poland and Germany will convene at IU April 18 through 22 for "Polish-German Post/Memory: Aesthetics, Ethics, Politics." This interdisciplinary, international conference focuses on Polish-German relations and, specifically, on the competing memories of the traumatic events of World War II and beyond. To share in this exploration of the culture of memory (and the memory of culture), experts will focus on history, political science, law, ethics, cultural studies, literature, film, and performance. In addition to 26 lectures by guests from the United States, Canada, Germany, Poland, Great Britain, Switzerland, and Australia, His Excellency Janusz Reiter, Ambassador of Poland to the U.S., and Adam Michnik, editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza and visiting professor of Polish history at Princeton University, will deliver public addresses. The conference has been organized by IU's Justyna Beinek (conference chair) and Bill Johnston; and Heidi Hein-Kircher, Herder Institute, Marburg, Germany; Kristin Kopp, University of Missouri, Columbia; and Joanna Nizynska, Harvard University. 2007-08 Admissions Fellows Application Deadline April 6

First- and second-year students are encouraged to apply for the Admissions Fellows program. Ten to fifteen Fellows will be selected to work with the Admissions Office during the 2007-08 Academic Year. Fellows work throughout the year to build relationships with potential applicants and admitted students. Responsibilities will include contacting students via telephone and e-mail; participating in open houses, online chats, and Spring Law Day; and to act as a Law School representative at other events. Fellows will be required to manage several student contacts and report progress at periodic meetings with the Admissions Office staff. This work will require 5+ hours a week. Fellows will be selected based on personality/interpersonal skills; previous participation in Law School activities, including Admissions programs and events; and personal interviews. Seeking Summer Admissions Assistants

The Admissions Office seeks to hire two first- or second-year students to work as admissions assistants. These students will work throughout the summer with the Admissions Office and serve as a resource and contact for prospective students. Applicants should be self-starters who are empathetic with the transitional and financial aid problems associated with moving to Bloomington and starting law school. An ideal applicant needs to be articulate, resourceful, creative, and a good advocate. Computer and typing skills are essential. The position will be available on a part-time basis ($10.00/hr) starting after exams and continuing through the end of August with flexible hours. Approximately 15-20 hours per week will be required. SBA will have bookstore hours again this semester. Check the door for our regular hours. Feel free to come in and buy your books or drop off last semester's books to be sold. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address.
