If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice
The Bloomington Chapter of If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice works with law students to cultivate awareness and conversation surrounding reproductive rights, mobilize activism, increase networking, and foster support for the realization of reproductive justice for all. We support If/When/How principles through advocacy and volunteer work, political involvement, and consciousness raising. If/When/How strongly believes that reproductive justice doesn’t just happen, and success comes more easily while working in coalitions. Therefore, If/When/How works closely with many local, like-minded organizations and recruits knowledgeable speakers to spread awareness and information.
Reproductive justice defined
"Reproductive justice will exist when all people can exercise the rights and access the resources they need to thrive and to decide whether, when, and how to have and parent children with dignity, free from discrimination, coercion, or violence.
"Reproductive Justice (RJ) represents an emerging framework, an analytical tool, a movement-building strategy, and a desired outcome. RJ advocates concentrate on the realization of the rights to have a child, to not have a child, and to parent the children we have. More specifically, we aim to construct legally tenable, realistically accessible avenues for informed, consensual, unobstructed decision-making about education, sex, contraception, sterilization, abortion, procreation, birthing, and parenting.
"RJ recognizes the ways race, class, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender expression, immigration status, and ability impact access, agency, and autonomy in shaping one’s reproductive destiny. By applying an intersectional analysis, RJ advocates recognize how each individual is uniquely affected by barriers to information, resources, health care, and social supports at different stages throughout their reproductive lives. We seek to secure the enabling conditions necessary for all people to thrive in their reproductive lives and beyond.” – If/When/How
