Professor Pauwels directed the Law Library for over 30 years as it grew into a major legal research library. It is now among the largest and most beautiful law libraries in the country. In 2004 it was named the "Best Law Library in the Country" by the National Jurist.
Her research examines the Indiana legal profession with an emphasis on early women lawyers, and the history of Law School. She is a contributor to a forthcoming biographical directory of Indiana Supreme Court Justices, and is currently co-authoring a volume of biographical sketches and contributions of the trustees and officers of Indiana University from 1982 to 2010. As a part of her research Professor Pauwels has conducted numerous oral history sessions with Law School faculty, staff and graduates, and is a part of the University Oral History Project.
Professor Pauwels is a member of the University's Bicentennial History Committee, and serves on the University's Campus Master Plan Task Force. She is a longtime member of Indiana Law's Building Committee serving as the Law School representative on architectural and building issues with the University.
She established the Legal Bibliography and Law Library Administration course offered in the IU School of Information and Library Science, which is the cornerstone of the joint JD/MLS program. Professor Pauwels retired in June 2011.
