Stephanie Hunter McMahon joined the Maurer faculty in 2025 as the William W. Oliver Chair in Tax Law. Over the course of her career, she has taught many tax courses as well as American legal history. Before joining the Indiana Law faculty, McMahon taught at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, where she was recognized for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. In 2017, 2018, and 2025, McMahon was awarded the Goldman Prize in Teaching, an award given to “professors who demonstrate exceptional teaching.” In 2022 and 2024, she was awarded the Schott Award given to a faculty member “for outstanding scholarly achievement.” In 2021, she was awarded the University Faculty Excellence Award for her service to the law school.
McMahon is also the author of West’s Principles in Tax Policy, now in its third edition, as well as Developing Professional Skills: Federal Income Tax. She has authored over 40 scholarly articles, essays, and reports, including articles published in peer-reviewed journals, The Tax Lawyer (ABA journal), Florida Tax Review, and Virginia Tax Review, as well as student-reviewed journals, such as Northwestern Law Review, Washington Law Review, and Michigan State Law Review. To date, much of her scholarship explores the relationship between taxation and the public’s perception of taxation. She has examined these issues as they impact the family and disadvantaged groups. Additionally, McMahon has explored the way that law schools provide legal education, and her most recent book focuses on developing young lawyers’ professional skills in tax courses.
Before entering academia, Professor McMahon practiced tax law as an associate at the New York offices of Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom.
