Registration instructions
Below are the instructions to register for your five fall semester courses. Remember, you will not select your individual classes your first year in law school. Instead, your classes in Contracts, Torts, Civil Procedure, Legal Research & Writing, and Legal Profession have already been assigned to you.
To initiate your class registration, please follow the instructions below.
- Go to https://one.iu.edu and sign in with your IU username and password.
- Search for the Student Center app. (It may be on the home page already, but if not, search for it.)
- Once you enter the Student Center, click on "View Class Permissions," then click on "Fall 2022."
- Copy down the Class Nbr for each of your five assigned classes.
- Go back to One.IU and search for “Enrollment Shopping Cart.”
- Once inside the Enrollment Shopping Cart, choose the term "Fall 2022," and in the space to add a class, enter each Class Number individually one at a time.
- Once you have added all five classes to your Shopping Cart and you are ready to register, select the check box for each course.
- Select the "Validate" button and review the validation results shown for possible action. If you are ready to register, select the "Enroll" button. If there are potential problems, a message will display. Select "OK." You will need to take action before being able to register.
- After you have enrolled, select the schedule icon to view the classes on your schedule.
If there are problems with your class permissions, such as a missing class permission or a class conflict, please email Alexis Lanham at adlanham@indiana.edu.
Book list
Here is the book list for fall 1L courses. Students can also search for books by course number on the IU Bookstore website. You should purchase your textbooks before the first day of classes.
Tuition/scholarships
Tuition will be assessed before scholarships have been posted in the financial aid system. The fall financial aid disbursement date is August 7th. The tuition bill will be generated on August 18th, with a due date of September 10th. If you have questions about billing or financial aid, please contact Associate Director of Financial Aid Paul Leopold III at iulawfa@indiana.edu for assistance.
Orientation
Orientation is mandatory for all entering students and takes place Thursday, August 11–Friday, August 12 on the first floor of Baier Hall. Plan on orientation running from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Sessions include introductions, case reading and briefing, hearing from faculty about the Socratic method, networking with your practice group advisors, and professionalism. You were given access to Canvas on August 5 (via email) where the full schedule and details are available. You can view a brief summary of the schedule here. Note: International students must complete online tasks for the Office of International Students (OIS) as well as attend Law School orientation. Visit the OIS website for international student details.
On the first day of orientation, you will have your introduction photo/video taken for internal law school purposes, so business casual dress is ideal. On the second day of orientation, you will be expected to dress in business professional attire, as this will be the day that you take your professional oath. (Further explanation about business attire can be found here.) Because we will be providing food at orientation, please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions by emailing lawosa@indiana.edu no later than Tuesday, August 3.
Pre-Orientation Checklist
You may be anxious to get started and wondering what you can do now to prepare yourself. The checklist below gives you an idea of what you can do to be ready to go when orientation begins.
Things you can do now:
- Register for your courses
- Purchase your textbooks
- Get your Crimson Card as soon as possible before Orientation.
Forty-eight hours after you have registered for your law classes, you may start the process for obtaining your Crimson Card. This is your University ID giving you access to essential university services including printing, university libraries and recreational facilities as well as student discounts on and off campus. It is often accepted as a debit card on and off campus as well. To start the process, visit the Crimson Card site. If you are new to IU, expand the "New students, faculty and staff" menu and follow the instructions for "New Students not attending orientation." If you already have a Crimson Card, expand the Current students, faculty and staff” menu. Make sure your IU email address is set up and working properly. - Consider your transportation and parking needs
IU Transportation Options
IU Parking Operations - Reach out about accommodations
In order to receive disability accommodations, you must register with IU's Disability Services. Once you are registered and have spoken with an access coordinator, you may reach out to Alexis Lanham, Associate Director of Academic Affairs/Recorder at adlanham@indiana.edu to help you navigate how your accommodations will function within the law school, as well as how they might interact with ABA requirements.
