Failure to apply by the stated deadlines could delay the processing of visa documents necessary to make your travel arrangements. It is not possible to begin the semester after the first day of classes.
How to apply
We receive applications from two types of exchange students: non-degree students and degree-seeking students. Please be sure that you are reviewing the information for the appropriate type of program below.
Non-degree exchange students from our partner institutions
Indiana Law welcomes non-degree exchange students nominated by our exchange partner institutions each academic year. Students may begin in the fall (mid-August to mid-December) or the spring (early January to early May) semester.
To apply, non-degree exchange students must be nominated by their home institution to participate in the exchange program. Nominated students should then complete the Indiana University online electronic application (eApp).
To complete the eApp, add the program “Law Non-Degree Exchange” as the academic program to which you are applying.
Students participating in the non-degree exchange program may earn between 8-15 ABA credits per semester, with 12 credits per semester being a typical course load. Upon completion of the LLB at their home institutions, exchange students may apply to return to the Maurer School of Law for the LLM program and use up to 12 exchange credits towards the LLM degree.
Non-degree exchange students will receive a waiver of tuition and mandatory fees. They are responsible for their own travel, visa, books, food and accommodation, mandatory health insurance and miscellaneous expenses. If you have further questions, contact Ms. Lucero Guillen (maguille@iu.edu).
Degree-seeking LLM exchange students from partner institutions
As part of agreements with our partner institutions, specific universities may nominate students to pursue an Indiana Law LLM degree as part of one of the following: a reciprocal degree exchange agreement, a dual-degree agreement, or a partner scholarship agreement.
The partner institution should provide the assistant dean for international programs with the name and contact information of the LLM nominee(s) by March 1. Nominees should then complete the Indiana University online electronic application (eApp).
To complete the eApp, select "Law Graduate Degrees" as the academic program to which you are applying, and then select "Master of Law LLM" as the academic plan. Please see your partner application instructions for the eApp . If you have further questions, contact lgradadm@iu.edu. You should use the corresponding upload spaces on the eApp to provide your personal statement and resume, and use the "Departmental Questions" upload space for your academic transcripts and test scores (if available).
Alternatively, you may send these supporting documents to lgradadm@iu.edu. Degree-seeking students will need to supply original documents and certified English translations upon enrollment.
Degree-seeking LLM exchange students from the Law School's partner universities will receive a partial or full tuition waiver of tuition (up to 24 credits) and mandatory fees depending on the details of each agreement. Students are responsible for any outstanding tuition and fees, as well as their own travel, visa, books, food and accommodation, mandatory health insurance and miscellaneous expenses.
